Angola labels Islam a 'sect' and bans mosques

That's obviously very extreme, but on the other hand I can see why the Angolans want to take this step.
Radical Islam is moving down into Africa at an alarming pace.

Playing straight into the hands of the extremists

If this stands.. something nasty will happen in Angola inside of a month I reckon.

very interesting times we live in .... can't say I agree with this, but I do understand it.
Wonder if any other countries would consider this move??
Also, what about the existing muslims in the country?? do they have to leave or convert to christianity??

I definitely don't agree with Islam. I think it overall tends to undermine gender equality and personal liberty. It also seems to encourage discrimination in all sorts of other ways, sometimes to such a degree that adherents to Islam punish members of groups they don't like with death.

All that said I can't agree with banning an entire religion.

IF something is declared a sect does that mean it is automatically banned? Is it not just mosques that is banned? I heard that mosques are known to be little nests of extremism. Perhaps that is why they banning mosques .... though now they might just drive it underground?

Idi Amin tried to kick Asians out of Uganda so it's like there isn't a precedent for that level of crazy

Or practice Islam in secret.

My mind instantly wonders now to how one would find all those closet Muslims... perhaps institute a new law saying all the toilets must face Mecca and wait to see who tries to poop outside. :p

I'm not even talking about extremism. Even the milder forms of Islam are incredibly sexist and encourage all sorts of other forms of discrimination (discrimination against those that leave Islam for example).

I understand the need to fight extremism but this seems like an excessive quashing of human rights to nail a few terrorists.

I think that it is a really dangerous move.

I agree. Instead of alienating extremists they alienate everyone of that religion. This will just turn many normal muslims in that country into extremists.

Then ban it on the grounds that you mentioned .... it strips others of their human rights.

..... but like others have said .... it will most likely attract a attack on Angola in the name of Islam very soon if it goes through. And also ... it will drive the militant mosques underground.

Banning a religion is bad. Its is extreme. Rather tax and regulate it.

I honestly dont believe religion can be forced out of a society. Especially an under developed society. I think religion can only be dealt with via education. People have to reach enlightenment themselves. It cant be forced on them.
