we are talking about people with the mentality of banning everything and not getting to the root of the issue

You don't have to ban the religion, just ban the stripping of human rights. If those in the religion refuse to adjust their ways of practicing their religion then arrest those people.

Not every Muslim practices Islam in the same way just as not every Christian practices Christianity in the same way. I'm sure you can find Muslims that don't consider their wives to be subordinates and that don't think it is acceptable to discriminate against apostates. Those who practice a version of Islam that doesn't advocate discrimination shouldn't be punished.

I agree that those who practice some no discrimination variant of Islam are likely to be rare, but I still think it is wrong to punish them when they have done nothing wrong. Punishing innocent people can't suddenly be right just because they are few in number.

Fine ... but maybe when we gay people start flying Boeings into skyscrapers and blowing ourselves up in public spaces taking civilians with us .... maybe then you can bring up homosexuality in this context. Obviously I dont agree with them making homosexuality illegal there .... but that hardly has bearing on this discussion I would say. This thread is about a country banning a religion that is constantly linked with militancy and extremism.

True .... but ag I dont know .... it just seems that where Islam gets a foothold in Africa **** follows .... and where Islam is in the majority .... people can kiss their liberty good bye.

Just my personal view.

all i was pointing out is that you "don't blame them" when they have an idiotic government banning something you disagree with. obviously people's freedom and belief is being infringed on which is a serious issue. nobody is asking anyone to like islam. whether a muslim or homosexual is thrown into prison for harming nobody is irrelevant, it's still an idiotic government

A better way would be to take the law as written in eg Saudi Arabi and re-write those laws so that the same restrictions would be imposed on Muslims as are imposed on non-Muslims in Saudi Arabia, Iran etc.

The USA are protecting their oil interests in Angola. See the influence, obviously some serious kickback deals!

Their reasoning is correct though: you cannot take away other people's freedoms, rights and "equality." It's no different to taking away the freedoms, rights of gay people.

Point is: Where do you draw the line? Based on what the "majority" want? Who protects the minority then? Look at Russia.

I am not disputing that they have banned gays. I am saying it has got no bearing in this conversation. I suspect the only reason why it was brought up is because I am gay ... and I get the impression it is being used as "You are gay ... gay is banned in Angola .... so STFU"

I hope I am wrong however in that assumption.

Look ... banning a religion is not right .... that I will say .... but taking into consideration that Islam is getting more and more militant in Africa and the fact that Angola is pretty close to the areas where militant Islam has got a foothold .... I am just saying I dont blame Angola for trying to stop it before it comes to their shores.
 
I guess Angolans will be avoiding all shopping-centres/malls for the next few years..

I take your point .... but I will say again what I said to STS ..... when gay people start flying airliners into buildings and blowing ourselves up in crowded areas then compare the two.

I am sorry ... I have no sympathy for a religion that encourages sexism, homophobia, extremism etc etc.

Maybe my judgement is clouded by fear .... but I have no problem admitting that I fear Islam. I think I ... and others ... have good reason to.
