Mathe may be part of a large criminal syndicate
Police sources say Mathe is believed to be part of a large criminal syndicate operating between South Africa and Mozambique.

headed by National Police Commissioner and alleged crime boss, J@kie Selebi

The sad part is he will go to a private hospital and the guard will go to a Govt hospital. I think they should have just shot him properly.

It looks like even Netstar needed some help to catch this scumbag.

By Solly Maphumulo, Graeme Hosken and Gill Gifford

It took a nine-year-old girl to bring down Annanias Mathe - the only man to bust out of C-Max prison.

The country's most-wanted fugitive was dramatically re-arrested on Monday, two weeks after his daring prison break, but he could so easily have given authorities the slip again had it not been for the quick thinking of a brave Tembisa girl.

Despite thoroughly searching the house, they could not find him and were about to leave when the little girl intervened.

"Nangu lomuntu enimfunayo (There is the person you are looking for)," she told the Netstar officers, pointing at a wall unit in the lounge behind which Mathe had been hiding.

The girl, whose name The Star is withholding to protect her identity, said proudly: "I peeped behind the wall unit and I saw a man standing quietly behind it.

"He was standing with his head bowed. He was carrying his T-shirt. When he realised I was looking at him, he gave me an ugly look.

"I was the only one who saw him. When the men were on their way out, I told them the man they were looking for was behind the wall unit."

Wearing a colourful red dress, the girl kept peeping behind the wall unit, saying excitedly: "He was standing there. He wasn't moving."

Scumbag notwithstanding: are these the people we want running our police force and prison services?

His arrest comes a week after police mistook North West Reverend Motlotlo Rabotape for Mathe. They shot Rabotape in a leg as he fled from undercover police, who he thought were robbers.
-
A beaming Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour, who along with provincial police Commissioner Perumal Naidoo witnessed Mathe being taken into C-Max, said he would find the "worst bastard warders" in the department to secure Mathe.

"Mathe will not be able to move or do anything without us knowing about it. He will be confined in a 'very special' cell until his court case, which I will personally see is expedited, following which he will be transferred to our notorious Kokstad Prison, where he will rot forever."

How is a cabinet minister going to get a court case expedited? Judicial independence anyone?

Pity Balfour doesn't "expedite" Shaik or Yengeni's sentence.

I thought he was already in a "very special cell."

"Notorious Kokstad Prison" - so if he knows it is "notorious" why doesn't he do something about it?

Language and rhetoric we don't need from a minister.

"Rot forever?" So much for rehab. So much for 2006. 1652 anyone?

said he would find the "worst bastard warders" in the department to secure Mathe"

Obviously - have LEARNT nothing.

//what kind of excesses and abuse does this language (and attitude/mindset) sanction? On the general prison population and population at large?

Balfour has a tendency of spouting sensationalist rhetoric often not accompanied by any real action. I'm glad he left the Department of Sport, woe Correctional Services.

I agree with your general sentiment but some people like this tend to be beyond rehabilitation.
I was being "rhetorical" - yeah I agree - but the mindset does not foster anything good: just more of the same.

Would think with our history "rot in a cell" and "worst bastard warders" are not things we want in the New SA.

They should rather go after whoever helped him escape in the first place, those are the true "worst bastard warders"
