Greetings gentlemen.

So the time has almost arrived for some R&R, but the problem is I work for a particularly difficult employer. I have applied for two weeks off (getting all my leave consecutively is just not going to happen), and it has been approved. The problem is I will get called back. I know this, because it has been going on for the last couple of years. Go off, get called back for a few days, go back, get called back, rinse and repeat. Annual leave has been going to complete waste and I am in desperate need of a holiday from work.

What are my options? What steps can I take to make sure I actually get a break out of my leave this year?

Actually go away on holiday? Go some place that it's impossible to be called back from, or at the very least out of cell phone range.

Be out of the city - then you can't get called back ;)

The above guys are correct.

One of the reasons it's a good idea to have separate numbers for personal and work. Then you just switch off the work phone.

I thought of that, but chances are my boss would be very pissed if I did that. Going away won't be an option, I don't get paid very well. Faking going away won't work either, because a co-worker lives in the house next door.

at 5pm when you leave the office on your final day of work before going on leave, send an email that you will be uncontactable for the duration, then turn your phone off.

Problem solved. When the company has a monumental hissy fit, remind them that you were on leave and are not required to be able to be contacted by the company during that period.

Toxic Bunny's idea is also a good one.

Failing that start sending your CV around.

Good point, bunny!

Well, I guess that will be the route I take. Now to pray to the gods that my leave doesn't get cancelled.

If you don't stand up to your boss on this you are never going to get time decent time off, do what Toxic says and turn your phone off as you are walking out at the end of your last. If you are really that irreplaceable that they cannot do without you for a week perhaps it's time to look for a new job. Being irreplaceable without great pay means you are getting shafted.

They have to give you a relatively good reason for cancelling, not just "Cos I said so".

This is also why I say you send the email at 5pm, they cannot then decide to cancel the leave.

But like a few other guys have mentioned, it seems very much like its time to start looking for a new job.

What a dumb thing to say. Adds zero value to this conversation.

OP, I'd suggest what the others have recomended. Email advising you will be uncontactable and switff off your phone.

This.

Or bend over and answer the phone each time he calls.

I'd much rather take Bunny's advice.
There is no requirement in the BCEA that you be contactable when on leave, other than if your contract stipulates it explicitly.

Its not me being irreplaceable, its the company that's severely under staffed and the boss' unwillingness to employ more people.

That's their issue, not yours. Once leave is approved, it's approved. You're within your rights to avoid taking their calls, and they're not within theirs to deny you future leave...

and they're not within theirs to deny you future leave...

Of course they are. All they HAVE to do is provide you with 6 months space within which you can take your leave if they don't give you your 15 days a year.

You guys are right. Screw it. I suppose its time I stop being a doormat and let their problems remain theirs for a change. Thanks dudes.
