I was busy taking down an image of Mint 17. when I got to wondering about the hazy days of the internet afore' we had file sharing and torrents.

Around the same time I was using Mirc one could drift all over the slow internet and find Anonymous FTP sites, mostly in foreign universities...... I recall that exploring these dungeons of information , going down a level and then up, changing directory, always curious to see what might be stored in some distant folder,

Sometimes I would stumble on gold, find a misnamed folder stuffed with DOS games, maybe 1000 mp3's or even those poor quality porn clips.....

I really enjoyed this form of cyber snooping, often wondering who were these king nerdy types that uploaded all those bytes to share with the world...

So today, I went in search of FTP treasure, but alas' it appears that most links are dead, no longer with us..... and those that are still functional, well they host some huge Linux distro's.....

In dismay, knowing that part of my youth has seen it's last byte, i ask my cyber brethren, "Do you know of any host's that have treasure?"

/Moose sighs as he presses the ENTER key!

Most of that has moved to the usenet scene as it's a better distribution system. Granted it is far more organised these days and makes stumbling upon fun things by accident rare...

Join some private/niche usenet groups, see what happens.

Only places I still see that use mIRC as the primary pointing method are anime fansub groups :\

I also saw channels on mIRC about two years back for Karaoke nutters..... although you had to use their script to access the room.

I must admit, that I have not looked into usenet, bothers me to register and pay a fee to look around.....

You can get invites from members to private indexing sites (the big SA one isnt accepting new invites at the moment) and most ISPs provide a news service anyway (although nowhere near as good service as the paid for ones).

You can get a taste for it using something like the free part of https://www.usenet-crawler.com/ and your ISP's news service. It's just that though - a taste.
