Another broadband comparison website launched

blah blah blah we all know that prices of broadband are crazy so we don't need ANOTHER site to remind us of this. There's enough of them, this is just the same story different version.

Need a site of consequence...

I disagree. I am glad something like this has been launched, the key is to keep it constantly updated. Other websites of this nature have failed to truly simplify the process of getting broadband. I hope these guys have an impact.

Guys ... I need to ask, why do so many IT Geeks have beards, and all have a similar style of beard to the two guys in this article?? Now I'm an IT geek, and the only time I get a mini beard is when I'm lazy to shave. I just have to ask cause so many IT Geeks have beards ... I dunno, I think it's funny :p ... That's how you spot the Geek in the crowd these days :p

Why the hell are they asking for my phone number and why does it imply that my phone number is required to compare deals? It's not. I'm curious as to who they're selling this information to...

And if you're going to launch a website, at least have it working properly. I couldn't sort by speed and the filter doesn't actually filter results properly. It annoyed me so I didn't bother any further...

This. Perfect description of my experience as well.

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.

Although, that Ian Saunders is quite attractive. Mmmm... IT geek <3

Telkom Tax

How about a site the compares the Line rental of ADSL?

Oh, I forgot, there is only one option for the ADSL Line Rental, and they forces you to take a POTS line.

The ADSL line rental+POTS accounts for 50-90% of the cost

For lite capped users, using 1GB/pm - the Telkom tax is about 90% of the total cost.
For uncapped users - the Tekom tax is about 50% of the total cost.

So, you can compare all you want, the savings will only happen when Telkom are forced to change.

Yeah... I stopped at the point that they wanted my phone number :erm:

And the site is not even current. For example, I could not find Mweb's 1mbps inclusive uncapped offer.

Why are people throwing toys about a phone number. There is no linking of the number to any other information, so I'm not sure what is compromised.

On the other hand a telephone number will provide an accurate way of ascertaining where you are; so if you are paranoid, simply enter the dial code followed by exchange code, and a random number.

They don't need any other information to sell the details to unscrupulous cold callers. All they need is to confirm that the number is active...

So just about anyone could register my number on their site too? Intentionally or accidentally...

An auto dialer will check lines.

Yup, as they can do on any form which asks for a phone number.

While you're right that it's not uncommon, that doesn't change the fact that there is absolutely no way in hell that my cellphone number is necessary for them to direct me to their comparisons page. My question still stands-what are they doing with it?

Probably 'cos they don't have girlfriends.

saw phone number, not cell phone number, which translated to landline for me. I agree that a cell phone number does not make sense.

They probably want numbers to identify your location so that the site won't return irrelevant results like a 10 Mbps package if your exchange doesn't support it etc.

I don't have a girlfriend therefore I will grow a beard? :wtf: That makes no sense. Most IT Geeks probably have beards because they don't really care what they look like, at least the ones I know don't anyway.

Ah well if that's the case then they need to make it clear - that wouldn't be a bad thing at all...

Well, the number isn't necessary to do a search.

Also, it wouldn't help much if you have a 10Mbps link but Telkom's checker database says otherwise. Or, for that matter, if it says you have a 10Mbps exchange but you're only capable of 4Mb.

I maintain that it's pointless and could only serve marketing purposes. Icky-pooh.

Turns out my hypothesis was correct. I queried the site twice, selecting the "fastest" radio button, first without then with my number. The first query (without my number) returned 10 Mbps products, the second also did but the site also displayed a map showing the nearest exchange and stating that it supports 10 Mbps. Whether or not it actually does is another story because the Telkom ADSL checker says my exchange only supports 4 Mbps, then again it also says that my exchange doesn't support ADSL at all directly underneath that so who knows which is correct. Personally I seriously doubt my exchange supports 10 Mbps because I don't live in a major metro.

So there you have it folks, that's why they want your number, to determine the maximum speed your exchange supports. As for the expected spam (if any), good luck with that telemarketers, I don't even have a handset connected to the line.
