A YOUNG woman tragically lost her life this afternoon (Friday) when she drowned while swimming in the Bay Hall side of the Pelican Island bay.

According to ICE Medical Services who were called to the scene, the 17-year-old and her friend were swimming when she went missing in the water.

Her friend reported it to bystanders, one of whom drove to the lifeguard tower and returned to the scene with two lifeguards.

A search turned up the teen’s body in the jet ski section of the area.

She was found floating face down and without a pulse.

CPR was performed once the body had been taken out of the water, to no avail.

By this time, ICE had been called and arrived on scene to find the girl had passed, and was declared deceased.

Could she actually swim? Many of these drownings are people that cannot swim yet they put themselves in harms way.

And they swim at at dangerous place with no lifeguards.....

that's a bit unusual to be found floating just after drowning

That area has strong currents especially when current is moving out. Seabed is very uneven with big drops and also very shallow places so you can walk quite far then a sudden drop deep and maybe like 20m away it's shallow again.

I won't be surprised if it's the currents that kept her down and later pushed her back up at a shallower area of the bay.

Saw it this week when it was spring low and high. Very uneven.

Year on year people drown there. Very nice area actually but very dangerous in the water although the water looks very calm and quiet.

it's unusual that she floated as the drowning process / mechanism is somewhat specific
the lungs continually try to suck in air, but get water, the brain speeds up heart and lungs for the delivery of oxygen, but instead water is sucked in.
during this time buoyancy is reduced as the lungs fill with water instead of air, simultaneously, the lungs are pushing salt water into the blood system instead of oxygen.
the victim often sinks pretty close to where they were last seen.

the cause of death is usually cardiac arrest or systemic organ failure, caused by the drowning process.

a truly hideous way to die

From my 45yrs living at the coast I've never experienced a current that drags you down, it will drag you out and eventually spit you out somewhere else.

Most of the people probably can't swim. A sign that says 'don't go too far in' is a challenge to a bunch of teenagers. Sadly she lost the game for the day and won't be the 'cool kid' anymore.

Never understood this. When I joined the navy, half my unit in boot camp couldn’t swim. Why the feck did you join if can’t swim? Hello??? Open ocean....water all around you!
