Sitting around, doing arb pc things and looking at the TV, there's this education program. Some university lecturer is giving a lesson on blood: characteristics and form. Interesting, decent BUT IT'S FREAKING MIDNIGHT! ON A WEDNESDAY MORNING!

So we have

  1. A decent education program that has been put together
  2. A lecturer compensated for her time.
  3. A presenter to present between lectures
  4. SABC staff to actually broadcast the show
  5. Some poor smuck of a technician forced to run it.

all running at 12AM. Why not create a education channel that runs 24/7 , or take some stupid soap opera's away? No lets waste money putting it all together and then airing it when the target audience are most likely asleep.

I'll never understand that either. Digital TV is the solution. The quicker we get this there will be an opportunity to have a dedicated education channel.
In a similar way that the current TV setup hinders education our pathetic internet does the same.
I came across a blog of some US teacher who said "In this semester my students have to watch 7 items on ted.com (and write an essay about each one). If they don't work on 7 of them they will automatically fail."
There is such a lot of good, edcuational stuff on the web and most of us miss out on it.

The latest SABC ad: PAy your lisence kids need the education..

I'm googling it.

I was in Namibia during December - big differences between how they run their country and our's (if you can call it being run)

Main things I noticed

they have 1 channels broadcasting 24/7 on agriculture, and a radio channel on mining and social development etc

They didn't change the education system - everyone you speak to (perfect english, not eehhhhh hello)
Locals are not loud mouthed as they are here.
Namibia is HOT - tar roads are all being maintained (saw workers all working and not sitting in the shade like they do here)
No farm invasions - Over there you have to have minimum of 1year in Agricultural studies (and pass) to qualify for any land (to farm) - they don't just give it away like here.
Lower crime - maybe because it's too hot :)
When I stayed in Windhoek, we asked the receptionist if we could walk in the streets after dark - first thing she asked my "am i South African"

That's typical of the government's attitude towards education. Education is the only way to solve all the crap that's going in the country at the moment, but still the government prefers to spend millions on giving farms away rather than building schools. If the post-apartheid governement had thrown everything at educating the massas after '94 we would be living in a very different country right now.

Ahh Open Varsity.

They change the courses every month/week I think. Last time they had a Bcom Marketing lecturer going through first year modules. Most of the time they have decent lecturers on the show, they also interview people that studied in a specific field, they then explain how the stuff are applied in the real world.

Very informative show imo they just need another time slot, but a dedicated channel would be better.

I have a Congolese and Nigerian colleagues and they both agree black people from South Africa are very lazy. According to them the people here just want everything for free and they have no idea how lucky they are compared to other African countries.

Would be great if the same could be implemented in South Africa.

So if you pay your TV License your kids are educated???

hhehehe!!

No they are trying to guilt trip people. Like I care if the fskers pass school. The ad is pointing fingers to the "rich" people. Saying pay your licesense then the "poor" people will have an education.

They can go FTS.

If the poor people have money for a TV they can pay their license. If they can have it for free so can I. Ubuntu!!! viva viva!!

My gym partner from THE DRC says exactly the same. Studies during the day every day of the week. Does gym`s with me at night..And works weekends as a bouncer at various clubs.
Hard working with no sense of entitlement and knows that nothing is for nothing.

Locals have tried to mug him on various occasions but because of his size and strength they have always come off second best. The ironory is that he has not given up and still sees a great future for himself in this country.;)
