Another fun filled station wagon thread

Aaah... a station wagon! My dad had one of these Holden's in the very late 60s / early 70s. Now that was a SW !!
Yeah - my neighbours had one of these bad boys when I was a kid - thing was huge!

None except the A3 that is. This has been proven 6 years ago already with irrefutable evidence : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/170313-A3-5-door-VS-A4-Avant

Proven? The only thing that's proven is that you took a pic of a 5 door hatch and station wagon, distorted because of the angle and how far away from the Avant you were which does no justice to its length.

Remember, a station wagon prioritises cargo volume. This is what has been proven, as well as the fact that a station wagon is not defined by a D-pillar.

having sat in the A3 5 door (aka Sportback) i would hardly say its anything similar to a station wagon.

Its just a normal A3 with a little bit more leg room in the back and 2 extra doors.

If you consider its got a similar (if not the same) chassis to the golf 5, then by implying the A3 5 door is very similar to a station wagon, you would indirectly imply the golf 5 is similar to a station wagon. And we all know the golf 5 is considered a hatchback.

Where car magazine pulled the statement " the A3 Sport[-]s[/-]back isn't really a "hatchback" per se, but a crossover hatch / station wagon." i have no clue.

Were Audi trying to make "sportback" a thing? Has it caught on with other manufacturers? Because people keep using that term as though it's common motoring jargon.

Yes and no, sportback is a known term for 4/5 door hatches. Maserati Quattroporte Touring sportback, Mitsubishi Lancer sportback, etc.

With Audi, it means a 4/5 door version of a 2/3 door coupe.

The "pillar" MS Paint pics in this thread are way more interesting than the actual (weak) argument of what A3 is or is not a station wagon.

Standing next to an A4 station wagon in traffic is all the proof we need to conclude that the A3 is a copy of the Mazda Etude Sports Wagon with a bigger back side, so in essence, more station wagon than a station wagon.

More conclusive proof

So true. The Audi A3 Sportback has much more space/cargo volume as well. Look how much shorter the Mazda is, proving this:

That is the Mazda 6 estate in your picture. The Etude sports wagon is a Mazda 3 estate. In both cases they are marketed as station wagons. The A3 trumps them in cargo space, hence it is even more station wagon than Mazda station wagons.
