I had a similar issue on my previous garage opener and found that the fault was caused by a sticky relay. I replaced the relay and the unit worked for a few more years before Eskom destroyed it with their loadshedding.

A rivet or a machine screw and nut.
If you rivet it you must put in a removable spacer that is removed after installing the rivet, that will release some of the tension and if you don't do that the handle will be clamped to hard and won't be able to move in and out of the side covers.
