One does not need to 'hack' an account to send email with the address as the sender. Sending email while masquerading as someone else is spam 101.

You think I don't know that?

This account was physically accessed from the gmail page, using the username and password

Just want to know how you know 100% it was from the gmail page?

1) Login to your mail... Scroll down... Check last 5 account accesses, their IP addresses and the method used.
2) How else would someone be able to send to the addresses in your contacts? And no, it's not the vacation responder hack.
3) The mail is still in GMail's "Sent mail"

i.e. someone gained entry, and used the web interface to compose and send mail to all his contacts.

Faking email is easy, you only need a server that does not check the sender address. When my gmail got hacked a week ago it was acually through the gmail servers using the Vaction message function.

Easy password perhaps? I would think there would be many more cases like this if it were a gmail problem. (The vacation hack is another story)

Ya, I'm inclined to agree. I told him to change his password and gave him a quick lesson on strong passwords :p

Just wanted to check if anyone else had experienced this to see if it actually WERE a gmail problem.

Got a similar email from a friend. Her vacation responder was turned on. So weird

Hey friend,

How are you doing recently? I'd like to introduce you a very good foreign trading online company and the website is www.ui-mall.com

It can offer you so many kinds of electronic products which you may be in need, such as laptops, gps, TV, cell phones, ps, MP3/4, motorcycles even several kinds of musical instruments and etc..

You can take some time to have a check ,there must be something you are interested in and you 'd like to purchase .

The contacts:
MSN: [email protected]
Email: [email protected]

Hoping you can enjoy your shopping from that company !

Regards

Happened to me on my hotmail account .... only found out about when people started phoning me asking why I was sending them spam. Had to change all my passwords at different sites and opened up a Gmail account instead .... no worries so far.

(and it was a strong password too)

Ok, that's interesting then.

The chances of breaking a strong password are very slim, so I'd love to know how they did it then

This happened to me as well - I think what might have happened is that I gave my gmail contact details to some new service, or that they someone managed to harvest my contact list in some way.

It sent a message to my ENTIRE gmail contacts list!

So many possibilities

Hi Guys.

I'm thinking to myself maybe You did not clear your browser cache or something like that on a pc with compromised security software.

Maybe, even spyware got your login details?

Make sure you are using https - dont know how much this helps, but goto your gmail settings and make sure this option is ticked.
