Like some others have said here, lightning rarely strike a telephone line directly....it is induced, or more often than not, a result of bad earthing techniques.

It is also area dependent.
In our area there are rocks underground that attract lightening. The name escapes me right now.
Most phone and powercables are buried underground here....
I leave you to decide what could happen, as there are often burnt grass spots...

If you are going to get phone surge protection, remember that cheap is not good....Thanks for the info. I have a fairly big house so range is quite important. I struggle at the moment on occasion to get a decent connection from my bedroom, so maybe the cheaper option is not a good option.
I will definitely get one of those surge protectors if they offer that kind of cover! WTF didn't I do this before?

Any magnetic rocks, like dolerite/lodestone/magnetite for example, attract lightning. Or even metal rich soil.

my tenda is still going strong after +\- 3 years or so
before that i used to replace my routers every 2 months or so because of lightning (jhb north area)
i bought the one with wifi (R499 at the time), my line did get hit a few times but this router is quite good and just restarts and powers away.
another thing that used to annoy me was that every time the router blew the lan slot on the desktop would blow as well, which meant i was constantly buying lan add on cards, now i just use the tenda with the wifi and get no problems, they also have one that connects via usb instead on lan which is also cool

This was one hell of a strike, all the lights went out and the CCTV system is all buggered up. First time a big strike has hit me in this new house.

incredible connection stock them, they cheap so worth the try.

Shot! I am thinking of just putting in a insurance claim considering my CCTV camera system is also fried.
Do the insurance claim as the CCTV system is worth it, and insist on a N300 modem replacement at the same time!
Maybe it's the Lords way saying you should stop supporting Hellkom!

Yeah I think its worth it as who knows what that will cost to fix myself.

Well you can have your cake and eat it too, get a nice router with a WAN port I use a Asus-N16 (Running DD-WRT), Then I purchased a ultra cheap D Link D-link DSL-2500U ADSL modem standalone router, For R240, and configured it for ADSL passtrough via PPPOE(IIRC), and connected it trough my expensive N16 via WAN, and DDWRT then uses PPPOE when its needed
So if lightning strikes the line it could potentially kill my adsl router and its a cheap R240 fix, and I still get to use the more advance features of the N16 for everything els (My entire NZB System runs directly from the router).
Ive never had to replace it mind you, probably due to all the protection:
Phone-line > Surge Protector > APC UPS (line filter) > Dlink DSL-2500U > Asus N16 > Computers.
So if lightning strikes the line it could potentially kill my adsl router and its a cheap R240 fix, and I still get to use the more advance features of the N16 for everything els (My entire NZB System runs directly from the router).

Ok so insurance won't pay for the CCTV cameras as this falls under building insurance. We are in the process of transferring the house into my name so I will have to fight with the owner to get her insurance to claim.
So now I am trying to decide if I should go for the option of getting a wireless router and a adsl modem as mentioned above, or just buying the Netgear N600.
What should I do? Is the N600 a decent piece of equipment? I need the best possible wireless range as my house is pretty big. With my DGN2200 I was getting signal at the other end of the house, but was pretty poor and would sometimes drop.

If you are looking for the best range then you should look at these routers together with the separate Dlink 2500U adsl modem.
R6300 -100 PES Router only
D6300 ADSL router
Much better range and over 1GB/s
"pricey" but totally worth it for your huge house. The Asus version of the 802.11ac wireless standard is also highly recommended

I'm getting a TL-WR703N from China for R180, going to install OpenWRT on it using DHCP passthrough, and will use a wired connection to put it in the area of the house that does not get great signal. (I also plan to use it to monitor my alarm panel, since it has a USB port, and I have a USB-serial connector for my alarm panel - two birds, one stone)
Which would make my setup look something like:
Telkom - surge protector - DLink 2500U - TL-WR1043N - POE Switch - WR703N - USB-serial - alarm panel
with desktop, laptop, Microserver and POE switch connected to the TL-WR1043N via ethernet, IP camera and WR703N connected to the POE switch.
Perhaps I'm overdoing things a little
