Another reason to avoid MWEB

Extortion. No other way to describe it.
Having gone to fibre with someone else, and having 2 other adsl backup accounts with other isp's, I decided it was time to cancel my MWeb account, since I have been paying for it for years, and never even use it.

However, because I still need my old email address that I have had since the Icon days (maybe 20 years or more?) I asked them to cancel the adsl, but I need to keep the email address.

R55!

For an email address!
Over 1/4 of the whole adsl account. Everyone else charges R30 or less. They want R55 just for an email address.
Of course they have me by the short and curlies..really need that email.
But that is just plain extortion and they know it.

Way to go Mweb....make sure old customers have a sold reason NEVER to make use of your services again.

Pathetic.

Hi - Just sign up for a 1GB capped account its R29/month. The product you referring to is their premium mail box which has additional storage etc

Or - you know - migrate your email to something else with a bulk mailer and auto responder... no need to hang onto an email address unnecessarily

Where did you see this? I'm in the same boat, still have my 2mb account at R79 just using the mail.

An email address is like a postal address. It can be changed. It may involve some effort - the OP can figure out if the effort is worth more/less than the money MWeb wants.

Sign up with gmail, get gmail to fetch your mweb mail, send all new mail from gmail. Send out monthly change of email address notices to all your contacts, change details for banks and all other service providers. After 2-3 months you will no longer have a need for the mweb email address. Using an isp email address just ties you into them and causes schite in your life.

25 Years of giving out an email address, literally hundreds of forums and online resources, some which I don't even remember but may get notifications from oneday. Things like paypal and medical aids and share portfolios and so many other things I can't even think of. Almost impossible to know what I used the email for...especially with about 8 other email addresses with various hosts.
Yes...entirely my fault. But 25 years online will do that.
Easier for me to hang onto this one for now.
Never heard of a R29 account, and I don't care about the premium mailbox...happy to downgrade it.

Still think R55 is insane.
