I am running Xp in a vbox on win 7 unltimate.

The reason is because I have software that needs a dongle, the dongle driver is only for xp.

So the software and the dongle run beautifully inside Vbox. No problem.
The issue is that I cannot get any usb drive to work.
None of my flash drives come up, but the usb dongle works perfectly:confused:

I have googled it, but everything I have found either pertains to running Xp on Ubuntu or Mac OS.

Anyone have an idea? Please?

Install guest-additions if not already done (start your VM, quit full-screen mode and click on /Devices/Install Guest Additions at top of virtualbox window, restart your VM).

click on your virtual machine / settings / usb (on left menu)

1. activate usb support
2. enable ehci (usb 2.0) support (without it usb keys were not recognized at all)
3. clik add (right icons) to add corresponding usb devices (this will save you from manually enabling/disabling them each time you plug them in)

I did all that, (installed guest-additions yesterday :o), and I added them. In the virtual machine, it sees a unrecognized usb devce.

by 'vbox', do you refer generally to a virtual machine, or specifically to VirtualBox ? what are you using ?

(Windows Virtual PC offered by Win7 may be a useful to try http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/)

Yes, sorry - Virtual Box 3.1.3. I'm going to give that a go!

wow! thats a massive install! 470mg for the xp mode file..

Then it seems I have a few other things to install...

Nope :(

In Virtual Box it installs as a usb storage device under windows 7 and I can assign the device to pass through, but virtual xp does not install it correctly. It shows up under device manager as an unrecognized device. This happens with my flash drive also.

In Windows Virtual PC, it installs as a usb storage device under windows 7 again, but does not appear in the list of devices to attach to virtual xp. However, my flash drive does appear in the list of devices here, and does attach successfully.
