Greetings, im mainly been a "lurker" so popping in 4 a post ... hehe ... i thought of viewing the current costs of things in SA & other countries from a different view ... buying/money power ... how much u would pay in those countries based on percentage of yr money spent compared with the ave sallery... so i made a script and put it on one of my unused domains (www.member.za.net) heres some results.

Telkom ADSL 512 Cost Per Country ( ICPS):
South Africa - R817.00 - Base - Ave Sal: R619
United States - $1,087.57 - Ave Sal: $824
Great Britain - £1,024.22 - Ave Sal: £776

Be Unlimited 24Mbps Cost Per Country ( ICPS):
South Africa - R15.95 - Ave Sal: R619
United States - $21.24 - Ave Sal: $824
Great Britain - £20.00 - Base - Ave Sal: £776

GWiLine 8Mbps Cost Per Country ( ICPS):
South Africa - R63.78 - Ave Sal: R619
United States - $84.90 - Base - Ave Sal: $824

Throwing figures around gives verry interesting results..

PM me if i should update anything .. ad countries (if u have a src) or if anything is stated incorectly ...

Enjoy! ... Cheers

I'm somewhat lost, what's the "ave sal" ? Is that per month , per year . Is it in hundred thousands ? [a salary of R619 doesn't make sense].

How must above be read?

Are you saying if i worked in the US and got an "Avg US salary" i would pay $1000 per month for ADSL Telkom ? .

yea i think it's per month. i think what he means is based on the average south african salary per month versus the amount for a 512k telkom line + 3GB cap, that's how much people in USA and UK would pay if they were paying telkom rates versus their average salary.

likewise if Be should implement their 24mbps adsl here, thats the amount we would be paying versus our average salary. i think the point is that we should be paying even less than overseas countries based on our country's average salary? this is the way i see it, so i may be wrong though....

Average salary is probably a bit tricky to use though. Average salary of R619 per month means you are living in a shack, working in a mine/domestic worker/farm worker.
Now i doubt you would be using such a service in that condition and this do not apply in SA only. Now in the USA , their avg salary most probably means you at least live in an apartment and got a phone , so internet is something that would be within their reach/requirements.

Thinking of it, what is the average salaries of the countries used? R619 sounds a bit low, considering minumum wage is pushing R800 p/m ? Are they counting people who get no income in the average too?

EDIT : http://www.joburg.org.za/business/stats.stm
The average monthly income per employed person in South Africa's nine major cities is R5 297.22. The figure for Johannesburg is almost R1 200 higher. The average annual household income in the major cities is R71 836; in Johannesburg it is about R15 000 higher.
