i've had it with XP. i need to re-install, but i'm experiencing the weirdest of errors i've ever had. whenever i insert a cd/dvd/usb device, my pc decides whether or not to show me the contents thereof. sometimes i can see the contents, other times i cannot. now the problem has escalated onto my one partitioned drive - i can only see the primary folders. all subfolders are "Empty". it is so frustrating. the funny thing is that it works when i start in Safe Mode. I have tried everything but nothing wants to work. what could be wrong?

vista is no better

it was working fine for a bladdy long time now, until my friend brought his drive over to copy some stuff. no viruses on there but for some reason it went bonkers since then.

hmmm doesnt sound right, check that antivirus & antispyware is up-to-date & run a boot time scan.

Otherwise reinstall xp or give Vista a bash im seriously liking it lately, much easier to troubleshoot and besides like it or not Vista is the new norm

there are many things wrong with it. i bought myself a new drive the other day so i'm planning on installing XP 64bit ASAP. thanks.

Why XP 64 bit? its terrible  if u going for xp stick with 32 bit.

Seriously a up-to-date Vista machine with decent hardware runs much more stable than an equivalent XP machine.

why is it terrible? i've heard it's more reliable and offers better performance. plus i get to use all my RAM.

Another thing to try: create a new account, admin or limited, your choice.

Before I formatted my C drive 2 months ago I could not use Task Manager in the Main log on. I created a new admin account and the problem was over. I still formatted to prevent a potential security breach.

If everything is OK with the new account, then there is probably wrong with the user account. If problem is still present, BACK UP important data, format and reinstall XP.

indeed. i logged on with the other admin account and i had the same problem, so i don't know what to do other than re-install.

My advice to anyone curious about going to Vista.

DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

XP is still the best, more stable and faster.

Vista is over-rated and a waste of time and money, I went to Vista, and now am back on XP.
