Another "what car should I buy" thread

But this time the circumstances are different.

Long story short, my beloved Alfa 159 is probably going to end up stripped for spares. It's developed issues that aren't economical to repair. I now need something different.

However, I have just bought a house and I'm expecting baby number 2 in January, so I'm really tight on cash at the moment.

Is there something decent that I can get for R20k-R40k, that won't give hassles? I checked on Gumtree for Tazzes and was surprised to see them going for R50k-R70k! Which seemed a bit excessive to me.

Am I being realistic? Or must I just come to terms with the fact that I can't afford to replace my car for a few months?
 
Sounds about right, those little Tazz vehicles are pretty pricey for their age, but then again they are robust machines. You maybe need to push up your budget hey, or find a good car and negotiate.

Yeah, I'm aware that they're robust. I'm just wondering whether it's worth it, or what else there is to consider. I'm not married to the idea of a Tazz, it was just the first thing I could think of. I don't normally shop in this end of the car market :)
 
A Tazz is a relic and should be left alone. It is not comfortable, not safe and does not have even the most basic features.

Do raise your budget to R50k but do not buy a Tazz, look for a Ford Fiesta, even the very older RSI model, Getz and other older Hyundai models.
 
All noted, especially w.r.t the Getz. I may know one that might be for sale soon, actually, if the owner goes overseas as planned.

If you are going to cart your children around in it just spend the money and buy something with at least a modicum of safety features.

Get it financed and just suck it up.

Also what could possibly be wrong with a modern new car like a 159 that would mean you only getting 20-40k out of it?

As usual, you're right. I'd love a Jazz, I think they're excellent cars.

But as I mentioned, I just bought a house, and my finances are kind of at their limit. I doubt that anyone would give me finance at this point. I'm gunning for a new position at work, so I may be in a better position in 6 months time or so, but in the meantime I need to go and get groceries sometimes.

The 159's book value is only about R60k at the moment, the problem is the engine. The rest of the car is ok. But Alfas aren't really cars that you'd buy for the resale value. Perhaps I'm too pessimistic, maybe I'd get more for it, but I'd have to see. What with the economy being what it is, and not knowing what's on the horizon, I was hoping to get the cheapest thing that's not an actual turd.

So can’t you get a donor engine for the 20k you are about to burn on a **** car?

Would be infinitely more sensible.

If I could get a 159 for 60k I’d buy one tomorrow, they are usually 120-170k.

I see they actually came out much earlier than I thought and there are some first get ones in the 60-90k range.

Yeah mine is a 2007 model. One of the earlier ones. If you want it, you're welcome to put in an offer... I'm going to look at all my options first of course, including estimates of what it will cost to replace the motor vs what I can get if I sell it.

I was planning to sell and get another car in about a year's time, but the current issue has forced my hand when I have almost zero spare cash lying around and credit is at the limits too.
