Hi Ladies and Gents

It’s finally time for my which car thread. After a long and joyful run with the TT(Toyota Tazz), it is time to retire it to a spare car. Due to a major promotion at work, and being client facing, I feel it is time for an upgrade especially since all my juniors at work drive much better cars.

So first thing first, in terms of money, I have decided on a soft budget of R215k and a hard budget of R230k. I have tried my hand at decent second hand vehicles and to be honest, I am too risk adverse to consider to further. One second hand vehicle that did catch my eye was a 2016 Polo Vivo with 22k km for R120k which to me was fair. That being said, I am will to consider under 10k km demo vehicles also.

A little about me, I am in my late 20’s and care more about the interior of the vehicle than the exterior. I am not one for impressing people and would rather be comfortable. I would like to keep this car for like 7 years with minimal costs. The tazz is a perfect car and the engine is so smooth and light on fuel but the body of the car is messed up and now is picking up rust badly and the lack of aircon is beginning to annoy me. It would be nice to have a good resale value if I do decide to upgrade soon but that’s like a 30% chance only.

I have considered the Rio, Corsa, Clio, Tata Bolt and the Fiesta thus far. The Fiesta is a bit too expensive for my taste and the others, I am not too confident in keeping it for 7 years with minimal costs.

I am now down to the Polo TSI Comfortline 1.2 or the 1.5 Mazda 2 Dynamic.
In terms of Cost:
TSI Comfortline: 253 100 base + 950 paint + 2 950 touch screen + 1 500 App connect +1 800 cruise control– 35 000 VW finance discount + 1 500 VW finance fee assumed is R226 800 total
Insurance on TSI: R1 450

Mazda 2 Dynamic: R230 200
Insurance on Mazda: R1 650

Now the main difference are (Sorry if this sounds like me thinking out aloud but that is what this is)
Mazda 2 is brand new, as in the new facelift model is coming out on 19 April 2017 while the TSI is old and is being discontinued.
I am honestly worried about how long the Turbo will last.
TSI is higher risk but strangely lower insurance.
TSI has better resale value, I think.
Easier to find accessories for TSI (eg: Mudflaps, Bonnet Guards).
Also I have included the technical differences in the attachment.

Any one cares to share their thoughts?

I'm biased but I'd go with the Clio 4 on your list. Rio and Corsa are awesome too. Personally, I wouldn't go with the Tata at this stage, although others have had a positive experience. Don't look past the Fiesta - they are very good cars and drive well (new one coming soon).

Between the Mazda and the VW, I'd probably go for the Polo because of the engine and refinement of the VW. My deciding factor would depend on how they both drive and what they feel like on the road.

Drive all the options before deciding and choose the one that best suits your needs!

My vote is for the Mazda. Fantastic cars. Also, if you are more focused towards interiors forget about a Vivo, the Mazda 2 outshines it easily.

I will go drive the new one this week. I just spoke to a mate and shesays she replaced the brakes on her Mazda 3 twice in 3 years at 12k a time

Owning a Clio out of maintenance plan seems expensive...

People should really stop worrying about turbo and people should stop telling other people to worry about them especially when they've never even owned.

**** breaks on cars. It happens. On the cheap stuff and the most expensive stuff.

A turbo is no different and no reason to panic about it at all.

Manufacturers wouldn't be putting them in most modern cars if they were worth worrying about.

I have 190k on my car with the original turbo. Know of plenty at 250k and more on original Turbo.

The odd turbo that does go is a drop in the ocean. And even then you can replace or repair it ...just don't be silly and do it at a dealership.

Then she's being daft, taken for a ride or doing something horribly wrong.

There's also no reason to keep taking it to a dealer for such things. And if it's under warranty and really needed to be replaced twice in three years assuming normal mileage then that should have covered it.

Mazda brakes are no different to anyone else's brakes.

I guess.... So that's means the TSI is a good bet

Warranty does not normally cover brakes as far as I know

Have you considered Honda Jazz for your budget you can get a brand new one for R230k or a demo model for R190k. You can never go wrong with Honda I'm sure you will be starting a family soon, so Honda Jazz would be a perfect car for that. It has all the basic you need in a car.

Moving away from Honda if I were you I would think twice about VW Polo Vivo or Opel Crosa. For your "soft budget" you will fine a decent car just do a research and go test drive see what you like.

If I may ask why is Mazda 2 so expensive, is it Mazda 2 on the same group as other small cars like Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Honda Brio, Suzuki Swift and VW Up. Please correct me maybe I'm wrong

Not for normal wear and tear no.

But if there's a problem that requires them being replaced twice in three years then that's not normal wear and tear.

Have had discs and pads replaced on a car and bike under warranty before because of a shudder due to discs warping.

.

*Never buy a sporty vehicle second hand because you never know what you truly get

This is a false and utterly illogical assumption.

The only thing that determines what you get is the previous owner, not the car.

Whether it's a Lamborghini or a VW Polo the precious owner determines how it was looked after.

And odds are the Lamborghini was looked after better because whoever owned it actually cared for cars while the VW Polo was driven by someone who cares for nothing but getting from Point A to B.

You never know what you truly get with ANYTHING. Not even brand new from the factory.

I can give you many reasons to justify the purchase of any car that has been mentioned.
All I can do is to add another to the list.
Go and drive a Baleno.

Brakes wear depending on driving style and how many km's you rack up. Mine last about 50 000km and I do 45 000km a year. So I do brakes pretty much once a year. I could probably get another 10 - 15k km out of the pads but hey.

So saying she changed brakes twice in 3 years doesn't mean much without knowing km's per year and if she rides the brakes, trail brakes, dabs the brakes often while highway driving........ lots of variables wrt driving style.

On the car choice, at that budget look at Kia or Hyundai they have good warranties and always have dealer specials. Try finding a demo. The Rio Tech is very well specced if you try loading a Polo to that spec it's a crazy price and you lose all the extras you spec on a trade in anyway. You might even be able to pick up a 1yo Cerato you get a really nice car for the money you pay.

But is the price really in the 12k mark

I have considered the Jazz and if it cheaper than I would have considered it... I feel the TSI and Mazda looks better and parts would be easier to source

I don't think so. It looks alot better to me and has a more premium feel
