TL;DR:

Less than 5 years old(due to needing to finance), mileage is of no concern considering beggars can't be choosers and up to 100k at a stretch maybe 120k.. we are with toddler, so something that can fit more than a shoebox in the boot would be a plus

So, due to SO's childish step father she is now without a car and this very well messed up financial plans we had before she was to buy a new car and give back the current car..

This means that she has to finance a new car and she doesn't earn too much every month..

These are some pretty restrictive parameters, but this is due to needing to finance the car..

i think you can finance a car so long as it is not older than 10 years?

anyway, imo a first gen hyundai i20, pick one up around 100k, boot is enormous for the class, sizeable and generally well equiped.

Financing with Standard Bank where she banks and they don't do more than 5 years..

First Gumtree search yesterday idn't bring up the i20 for the western cape, but that's a good option so will keep an eye out..

look around maybe for other finance options? by this i mean reputable ones and not a personal loan/dodgy places. but anyway the newer the car to a point imo is better anyway, good luck searching.

What is your budget?

Used cars in ZA are overpriced to such an extent, that it doesn't make any economic sense to buy used - hence my opinion - buy new/ demo

look at Suzuki brand, excellent customer service, reasonably priced and good value

My choices

1st: Suzuki Swift
2nd: Honda Jazz
3rd: Hyundai i20 or Hyundai Accent if you prefer a larger boot

What about a Kia Picanto 1.2....v nice IMO although 90% of all the listings/decent 2nd deals seem to be in Gauteng.

The Swift doesn't have much of a boot; rather call it a large cubby hole.

Set your sights on a Jazz. It has the space and is reliable.

The jazz has way little to no options at the budget..

Suzuki swift, celerio and Kia picanto does not have practical boot space.. considering that she will be driving the car for a good while, boot space is important..

My SO has the new one. Great car but far too small for a baby. Not a chance will a pram fit in the boot and with a baby seat in the back, the driver really isn't left with any space.
We are going to have to sell ours soon as the baby arrives so also keeping an eye on this thread.

Wat?

A 5 year old car is ALWAYS going to be a better value deal over a new/demo one so long as age isn’t an issue for you.

Never buy new, you lose money the moment that thing goes in your name. Only buy demo or somewhat used, preferably 3-5 years old.

Demo is an easy 10-15% off and it increases steadily as you go deeper into second hand territory.

I managed to fit quite a bit in the boot but...If you in CT and want to sell , buzz me - I may be interested for right price and condition

Look at an Opel Meriva, but you will get a 6 year old.

Definitely NOT the swift, Mazda 2 or Picanto mentioned so far in this thread if you need boot space.

+1 for i20 or Jazz.

When you take into account the (Fixed/ Capital) Cost of kilometres driven on the used cars, and add it to the price of the used vehicle, it's way overpriced, when compared to the price of a new/ demo car. On top of that, new/ demo cars usually come with warranty plus service/ maintenance plan as well.

Aaah that old perceived value sham.

I see why you are confused now.

How do you come to the cost of kilometres on the used cars and why are you adding it to the purchase price?

I had a chance to look at some cars today.. this led to another requirement that my SO added to the list, must have electric rear windows..

Contenders on the list:

2017 fiesta with a autobox good amount of boot space and looks like the top spec, so electric rear windows..

2017 Corsa enjoy doesn't have electric rear windows, but looks very good inside and good enough space so I suspect that seeing the car in person might sway her about the rear windows..

If an i20 exists with electric rear windows, it might make the list, but I suspect not, as the motion trim model I looked at was quite pricey, compared with the Corsa as an example, at almost 30k more..

Also saw a 2015 fiat Panda pop, wasn't able to view this in person but looks good.. anyone have experience or thoughts on this..?
