Having considered all my wants and needs, I have narrowed down my upgrade to two options: Nokia E72 or Blackberry Bold 9700. Opinions?

Go!

If you want email with you all the time it is a no brainer. 9700!!. Just got it, it is superb. Been on BB now for 2 years.

That BB mail is an added extra if you don't have it included with a contract...

Nokia Messenger is also push email. Heck Android-based phones also have push email (or push Gmail).

Personally, the E72 is a better phone,if you own a BB, and the BB service is offline - you're screwed.

So, all in all, get the E72. You won't be sorry.

It's on contract and if I take the BB I'll take the BIS with it.

Is Nokia's push email exactly the same a BB's? Is all push email the same, or are there differences?

Well, my HTC Hero has push GMail.
That is as soon as I get mail sent to my gmail account, I get it instantly.
In fact, I timed a friends BB receiving mail..

I sent the same mail to his email address, as well as mine - guess who got theirs' first?

ME !

BIS is still dependent on the BB service.... Any trouble on RIM's side, and you are left standing.

WRT BB service: There are 2 costs involved here. 1st is the actual Service provided itself (email etc.), the 2nd is the data cost. That is, the transfer of you email over cellular networks.
If you take the BB, make sure that you Service Provider includes the data-charges bit.

Nokia has full push mail. Works exactly like BB. Only, it's free.

I have heard great thing from BB, but find the UI distinctly boring. Nokia E72 has a slightly better UI, history.
I trust Nokia more.

At the end of the day, play around with both. Decide only then.

Wait ... explain this more slowly ... with pictures if possible. So if I pay the extra R60 p/m to Vodacom, I still have to pay data costs?

I'd go with the E72... Symbian is one seriously potent 'phone OS.

If not included with contract, the following applies:

In order for push email, you need a data connection (the thing that allows one to surf the web on their phone).
On a pre-paid system, one pays for the data used.

The way BB works is like the above. Your 3G/Edge is always on, thats the only way you will get push mail.

The same applies for all handsets with push mail ability.

So. If one has a prepaid agreement, you pay for phonecalls. It most likely will not include data traffic, which BB needs, leaving you to pay the following:

R x (Prepaid amount) +
R 60 (BB Service)
R y (Data usage)

= Possible financial troubles ahead..

But I'm on a contract. Vodacom Talk 130, to be precise. So I'll need to add the R60 (BB service) to my existing contract amount. I don't currently have a separate data bundle with my Talk 130. Am I going to need to get one in addition to the BB service?

(Assuming I go for the BB, which I'm not entirely sure of yet.)

You talk CRAP. Straight out.

To get email on a blackberry you need BIS @ R60 per month or BES at R99 per month (The one is for normal email, the other is for when your company has an enterprise server).

If you pay your R60 per month, ALL yes I said ALL data that goes through the blackberry APN is FREE . There are no data charges for email, on device browsing, facebook, twitter, myspace, flickr etc.

On the E72, the email service is free - but you pay for ALL data transferred over the network (which can become quite costly if you get as many emails as I do).

If you get the R60 BIS service, it includes all the data you are going to use on your blackberry through the blackberry APN. That means all email, on device web browsing through the blackberry browser, facebook, twitter, myspace, weather etc are all included. *Streaming data is not included such as Youtube.

Ah, sweet. Thanks. We have no Enterprise server at work, so BIS will work fine for me. Thanks for clearing that up.

BlackBerrys are the most terrible phones ever made. I would go for the E72 purely because its not a blackberry

That's very useful, thanks. Would you care to support that theory? Why are Blackberrys so terrible? Which Blackberrys have you owned on which you base this conclusion?

Well i work with them on a daily basis and that touch screen of the storm was a stupid click thing, needless to say that broke after a few months.
The BES service is shocking, its constantly falling over and you have to "re-authenticate" your device with the server.
If you looking for speed using there "Free" data service please dont as you are at the bottom of the list when it comes to priority.

Okay, well neither the touch screen issue nor the BES issue are remotely relevant to me, since the Bold 9700 has no touch screen and we don't run an eschange server at the office, so I'd only be using BIS. I'll ask around a bit about the speed and stability of the browsing. Unfortunately, every BB user I know is on MTN rather than Vodacom, so it may be a slightly different kettle of fish.
