Anti-immigrant march

You want the ANC government to suspend the constitution?

I'm pretty sure the constitution doesn't give people the right to express themselves regardless of the outcome. Marches have been banned before because of safety/security concerns.

You want the ANC government to suspend the constitution?
You reckon the ANC government even has a copy of the constitution they haven't wiped their asses with yet?

Ok I'm off topic a bit, back on topic: they should allow the march provided it meets all the usual requirements, they should also prepare the anti-riot gear given the likelihood of violence and shut it down hard and fast when the inevitable happens

Anti-migrant march organisers distance themselves from Attridgeville violence

PRETORIA - Following violence in Attridegville this morning, a large group of protesters has left the township on foot and is arriving in the Pretoria CBD.

Numerous roads have been closed as police confront the demonstrators, firing rubber bullets to disperse them.

Hundreds of protesters are expected to march to the Home Affairs Department to hand over a memorandum which outlines grievances against foreigners.

Police officers from across Gauteng have been deployed to monitor the anti-immigrant march.

Citation needed.

As soon as you empower the government to limit rights for whatever reason, you give them the only reason they'll ever need to limit the rights in question.

This the ANC we're talking about.

Besides as has been already noted people will demonstrate regardless. The ANC knows the power of the mob regardless. If they lack the ability and/or willing to police legal demonstrations what makes you think they have such to police illegal demonstrations?

By all means, if it turns into a riot send the rioters to prison and/or hospital.

... and pass on costs for damages resulting from the march directly to the organisers

"We would like to take this opportunity to urge all people participating in this protest action to do so in a peaceful manner. Those taking part should also note that the carrying of dangerous weapons is prohibited and those who decide to do so will likely face criminal prosecution," said Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.
Public order police were seen walking behind a group of young men wielding sticks and rods. Some had their faces covered.
Very peaceful and unarmed :erm:
Why did the cops not do their jobs and arrest the fsckers ?

Section 17 of the constitution: Section 17
Everyone has the right, peacefully and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket and to present petitions.

Yes, will you can't withhold permission to march because you don't believe it will be peaceful.

Government: "You can march as long as you're peaceful".

Protest organisers:"ok".

Government : "You can't march because we don't believe you will be peaceful".

... and now government has the right to ban anti-government marches. All they need is a pretext. Who here thinks the government is above instigating violence at peaceful protests in order to create that pretext to ban all anti-government protests?

Governments have been doing it for centuries.

and therein lies the problem . Never happens without huge outcry about the rights of the protesters.

I agree 100% with you. We don't want the government given the opportunity to ban protests. But hell .... there needs to be consequence for savages who use the opportunity to threaten, steal, pillage, break ...

And the outcry about human rights often seems to come from the same people who complain about the destruction of property, etc.. It strikes me that some people are more interested in political points scoring.

On the other hand it's a catch 22. South Africa has no shortage of people willing to get caught up in a violent mob.

136 arrested in Pretoria during xenophobic violence - Phahlane

Pretoria – Police arrested 136 people in Pretoria West over the past 24 hours, including during an anti-immigrant march on Friday morning, acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane said.

“Although people from Mamelodi marched peacefully, a group from Atteridgeville threw stones and bricks. Confrontation with non-South Africans ensued,” he told reporters.

The violence broke out during an anti-immigration march organised by a group calling itself Mamelodi Concerned Residents.

Phahlane could not say how many of those arrested were foreigners and how many South Africans.

“The situation may be exaggerated by some for their own gain. At this stage, the situation remains under control.”

The march was not solely about immigrants, but also about foreigners being involved in crime, he said.

The City of Tshwane had approved the march.

“Our Constitution provides for people to express their views. Laws provide for people to apply for a march or protest."

Fresh clashes between SA citizens, police in PTA CBD

PRETORIA - Tensions are rising again in the wake of Friday morning’s violent march against immigrants.

In the last half hour in the Pretoria CBD, a group of people have tried to force their way into a supermarket owned by foreigners, saying they wanted to search it for drugs.

At the same time, police have been forced to form a fresh barrier between locals and non-nationals in Sunnyside, preventing another flare-up of violence.

Police have opened fire with rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse protesters in Sunnyside.

Riot police have prevented protesters and foreigners from attacking each other.

Police say they stepped in when protesters started hurling stones.

The police had closed off an intersection in Sunnyside instructing the crowds to disperse but in turn the residents became angry.

The crowds are now singing struggle songs.

Meanwhile, a group of over 50 men are gathered outside one of the shops apparently owned by Pakistani nations.

Police stopped them as they tried to break into the store claiming there were drugs inside.

One man says they just want to search the building.

Immigrants are fine, as long as they're here legally and contribute to the economy. Illegals must GTFO
