Does anybody use anti-static wrist bands for building or upgrading your computers and where can you buy it. I have been looking at various online computer shops and they all seem to be out of stock.

these are standard commodity items in the electronic industry. Any decent electronics component supplier will have them.

I use them frequently when assembling PCB's with very expensive parts that are susceptible to ESD

Nope...I should maybe someday get one though,i've blown one CRT screen and one mobo due to some...buildup....

Anti-static wrist strap = garbage. Only the geeks with huge amounts of arm-hair in those A+ education videos use them.

If you grounded / discharged yourself to the metal casing then you are static free and no wrist band is required... If you have an IT Workshop, you can place anti-static matts...

Look, if you take the necessary precautions when working on your PC, touching the case etc, then you shouldn't have to worry.

It also depends what you working on obviously. There's a difference between working on your R600 motherboard and a $100 000 server board thingy.

If you're working on a $100 000 piece of equipment...... you wear the damn strap. :)

If you're a Telkom employee, not wearing the strap when replacing SDH/ATN cards is grounds for dismissal

The only reason you'd built up static is if you wear woolen socks and a jersey. And those fuzzy slippers and then proceed to drag your feet around on the carpet. If you stop letting your grandmother dress you and walk upright you shouldn't have a static problem.

Wearing nylon is also a problem.

If you really want to ground yourself then rather touch a water tap than the case.

I usually just make sure the case is grounded, because if your poking around in there, you can't really help touching it.
