Then use Firefox with Ublock origin. Also be sure to enable all the features of windows defender, like app control and ransomware protections

Thanks. I had the 2 pc 1 year license for Total Security. Got a new laptop avout 2 years ago and when I downloaded Kaspersky on it from the right link (I double checked) it installed the russian version. After talking to customer support they somewhat fixed it by sending me a link but I still get pop ups in russian. I am a n00b at building a custom pc but I am not stupid. I never tried the vpn, is it like nord? Still considering options. If it was just my pc I would just use free malware and common sense but I need a license for my business partners laptop which will require a paid av. Looking at Norton 360 premium. Might stick to Kaspersky. My renewal was dude later this month but I cancelled the auto renew.
Kaspersky you were using is still probably the best, it is the only AV that scored 100% on online detections etc, not one other AV did. They also give you that free VPN which is great. I think mine was R600 or something for their top of the range product for a year for 5 users + vpn etc. It was a pain in the ass to get activated but once it's working and done it's great. The reason I say pain is because if you renew your subscription it can be R100 more expensive than say a special on their website, but if you buy the special on their website it is a pain to activate as you already have a subscription etc.
If you bank with ABSA, you get Trend Maximum protection from free. Its one of the best.
Thanks I had no idea about this![]()
Trend Micro
In addition to the multiple layers of online banking security already available, we offer all Online Banking clients Trend Micro Maximum Security - a FREE anti-malware program that provides you with multi-device protection from the threats of viruses, malware, being phished as well as preventing...www.fnb.co.za
Thanks. Just bought the premium 3 devices for 1 year. R669 so pretty reasonable. It's my PC and a business laptop but I am likely to get another laptop so I will use the 3rd license on thatJa I always cancel auto renew on day 1. Then you can decide a year down the line if you want to continue the subscription or not, if not it's a month to month contract.
The VPN choice is great and very fast, you just right click on the icon in the system tray and turn on/off the VPN. You can then also select which server in the world you want to use, there are hundreds. Then you can also choose between one server or two, so bouncing your IP from one to another. Then also servers for torrenting, gaming, surfing etc etc.
Kasperskys premium product is by far the best on what it offers IMO, and their lab results are number 1.
Look, I'm not going to get into an argument. Everyone should definitely use common sense, unfortunately, and in my line of work I see this daily, There are very, very good & convincing phishing mails. You get zero day malware your common sense wont detect. Defender might help, but it's been proven time and again its detection capabilities are mediocre at best. Also remeber, you might be super clued up and can spot a dodge webpage/email/software a mile away, Believe me when I say vast majority of people are not.Windows Defender for gamers.
All the others add more unnecessary overhead.
Couple that with some good old common sense and you should be fine.
If this was true, I would have gotten infected some time in the last 10 years.... but nothing / nada.Look, I'm not going to get into an argument. We had an instance last week whereby a very popular SA website was trying to infect visitors with some kind of worm. Our AV detected it. Defender did not.
There are so many ways to get infefected...The smallest vunrability and they are in.
Now even installing the best AV software available won't make you 100% safe, But it's going to be a heck of alot better than defender and common sense alone.
If you have the option to get the paid version of trend from ABSA or FNB for free, Take it.
Mcafee is a POS, And there is no free Norton. I would also remove them.If this was true, I would have gotten infected some time in the last 10 years.... but nothing / nada.
When I get a new PC to set up for a customer, the first thing I do is remove Norton or McAfee.
I don't want them thinking I bought them a slow computer, or being harrassed with stupid renewal messages.
In most of these cases, the commercial anti-virus is WORSE than a real virus... and just as difficult to remove completely.
Agreed. Windows Defender has its shortcomings.Look, I'm not going to get into an argument. Former Firefox developer Robert O'Callahan, now a free agent and safe from the PR tentacles of his corporate overlord, says that antivirus software is terrible, AV vendors are terrible, and that you should uninstall your antivirus software immediately—unless you use Microsoft's Windows Defender, which is apparently okay.
A couple of months back, Justin Schuh, Google Chrome's security chief, and indeed one of the world's top infosec bods, said that antivirus software is "my single biggest impediment to shipping a secure browser." Further down the thread he explains that meddling AV software delayed Win32 Flash sandboxing "for over a year" and that further sandboxing efforts are still on hold due to AV. The man-in-the-middle nature of antivirus also causes a stream of TLS (transport layer security) errors, says Schuh, which in turn breaks some elements of HTTPS/HSTS.
So Support ends on Windows 10 in October this year, Which means no more security updates, no more patches. Same goes for Office 2016 and below. So if there is a vunrability, guess what, its wont be fixed. It will be purely up to the AV to stop/block any attacks.Lol yeah no. No need to pay for an AV.

It might be time to stop using antivirus
Update your software and OS regularly instead, practice skeptical computing.arstechnica.com
Great insights there, really adding value and knowledge to the conversation.Yeah No.
If you are not willing to go to windows 11, you should probably switch to Linux, rather than relying on 3rd party antivirus. So Support ends on Windows 10 in October this year, Which means no more security updates, no more patches. Same goes for Office 2016 and below. So if there is a vunrability, guess what, its wont be fixed. It will be purely up to the AV to stop/block any attacks.
Again, if you are with ABSA/FNB, you get Trend Maximum securty package for FREE. Not paying anything.
But if you guys feel you are immune to viruses/malware/Tjojans/Ransomware, then thats cool, you do you. But dont go telling other people how safe it is not using a proper AV. This is like you believing fcking around without a condom is safe beacuse you read/heard somewhere a hot shower and beet root is all you need.....
There are also many cases where defender catches things that other AVs missed.Look, I'm not going to get into an argument. I go one step further and nuke the default install from orbit and do a fresh install with an ISO from Microsoft. If this was true, I would have gotten infected some time in the last 10 years.... but nothing / nada.

There are not many cases where Defender catches things other AVs missed — not if we're talking about a proper AV like Kaspersky, Trend Micro, Bitdefender, NOD32, etc. Quite the opposite. There are also many cases where defender catches things that other AVs missed.
The key is not to rely on a single layer of defence from a single vendor.
You should be running an AD blocker and DNS based filtering regardless of the endpoint antivirus you use.
In a business you should also be running URL filtering on emails as well. Most people leave their office 365 on defaults, where it could be a lot stronger.
No one should be using Windows 10 right now anyway. Just move to Windows 11 or Linux. So Support ends on Windows 10 in October this year, Which means no more security updates, no more patches. Its a bit of a double edged sword though. Many distros are repeating the same work.Linux has so many different variants. It's brilliant.
