Hey guys,

i found an anti-virus program for ubuntu, I cant remember its name. Now, i know there ain't viruses for Linux, but i wanna download usenet/torrents from my linux OS, then scan files to make sure there safe before opening them on windows.

Is the anti-virus programs for linux any good?

clamav if you are running e-mail server with win boxes on network you will need anti-virus

I'm not going to involve myself with this debate again, all I'm going to say is I have now been running Linux for over 8 years and never even once had a malware thread or virus.

When I was running a Linux server I had many failed hacking attempts, but that is where it stoped.

As for Linux anti-virus, I have no idea if they even have the same definitions as their windows counterparts, so make sure of this before you try and open them torrents in Windows.

Linux anti-virus is used to protect win boxes (file server, mail server ...) not to protect Linux. Careless Linux admin can let hackers in but that got nothing to do with virus.

Clam-AV is pretty good. It runs a whole lot better on linux than on windows. It also works very well to detect most virus;s in emails ect, so it might not be the best to prevent all windows virus's, but its pretty good.

You can also buy fprot for linux. Actually, there are a whole list of AV scanners for linux, just check out what amavisd-new supports and you will get a good idea.

Buy F-PROT ? Why when it is an ebuild in Gentoo. I presume it is the same proggie we are talking about. AVG free I use on XP but one has to buy the Linux version. I haven't tried installing it. Big Faux-Pas on my part! I took a stick to work and got a virus on it. I should have used F-Prot to see if it works instead I ran AVG Grrrrrrrr.

regards peter

I've used Clamwin before, its pretty decent actually. Although when I used it there was no "resident shield" or something like that. Maybe that has changed, will definitely install it on my Linux box this weekend, to protect my windows partition.

if you have a windows AV you have no issue. It will be like you had downloaded the stuff in windows.

what is your aim?

Oh yea, I didn't really think about that.... ooops!

Ok well, I'll still keep it to clean my friends flash disks before they stick them into my PC. They always have virii on them!

You don't need AV. 99% of the problems are due to poor administration and the real exploitive programs out there need at least Admin access. Since Ubuntu keeps your account running with lower privs you should never pick up any Linux viruses unless you explicitly allow them in.

For the Windows side of your Machine, ClamAV is the standard but I find better for mail servers. If you just want to scan drives and flash disks, Avast has a free edition for Linux that works like a charm.

do you guys think there are any viruses for linux

Does a bear sh17 in the woods? OF COURSE!!! Dear lord man, nigh on 40 years ago did Ken Thompson develop a trojan into the c compiler so that a back door would be installed on *nix machines.

Can you please provide me with download link I would like to install that. Will it work on Ubuntu 9.04. Instructions how to install it will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

BTW Linux is about 25 years old.
I would you rather Google before making such a false statement.

Linus Trovalds released the first source of the Linux kernel to the public in 1991.
Linux is still very young as you can see, only 18 years.
