Hey guys

I need some advice to get rid of ants in and around my house.

I have a Jack Russell so it needs to be a pet safe way.

Any ideas?

They are everywhere and I can't leave anything out...not even the dog's food is safe.

Water your garden a lot, sounds mad but it works... Had a terrible ant problem at home until we put in a borehole and irrigation system, haven't seen one since.

Orange peel.

Buy a bag of oranges and finely grate the peel and sprinkle wherever the ants come indoors. Ants apparently hate the Limonene oil in orange peel.

Woke up one day to ants biting my feet, in bed. Put sunlight liquid on the windowsills (where they came through) and all around the corners of my room. Haven't had an ant in my room since then. And my dogs sleep by me, so I believe it was safe. I do have carpets in my room though, so they couldn't lick it up

There is a poison that I found that works wonders: http://pestcontrolshop.co.za/product_info.php/maxforce-ant-p-293 it is about R250 a bottle @ builders but lasts a long time.

It isn't pet safe but we only ever use it on the counter tops and cover it - so the cat can't get to it (Don't have to worry about the dogs because there is no way the pugs will get up onto the kitchen counters...) - A cheap plastic container with some ant holes cut into it with something heavy on top of it works wonders.

Just sprinkle it near where the ant are coming out of the wall and they drag it into their nests and it murders all of them.

Get some of this stuff from Makro or Pick n Pay and draw lines around your house or rooms where ever you want the ants to stay away....

^This, except maxforce is for outdoor use, so sprinkle around the perimeters of your house outdoors and after a few days the whole colony dies. Should be safe for pets as long as you keep them indoors for a few days.

Alternative pet-friendly thing is to mix baking soda and powdered sugar together and sprinkle it where you see ants, apparently they can't tell the difference and the baking soda kills them in the end (your dogs might lick them all up though).

*offtopic: Once I had a braai and a piece of boerewors fell onto the floor and the ants were all over it within a few min, I sprinkled some maxforce next to it and they all stopped chowing the wors and went straight for the maxforce stuff... :)

Thanks! I'll try Maxforce...just have to somehow get my curious Jack Russell to leave it alone :p

Someone once recommended a solution of vinegar and water. Absolute rubbish, the ants actually seemed to like it.

baby powder, i **** you not. bury the nests entrance in baby powder, they hate talc

edit: talc suffocates them and makes it hard for them to walk and dries up whatever little smells they give off. give it a try, always worked for me

Tried and tested.

Any artificial sweetener with aspartame, they love it to death. Eradicates nest in 7-14 days. The problem with eradicating nests is after a few months another colony moves in. So control is better that eradication. Tip... don't feed them. They are where food is available. Remember they are one of the cleaners of nature.
Apparently aspartame was/is ant poison , but is low doses to humans it doubles as a sweetener... that is where the "aspartame give you cancer" comes from.

For what it's worth, professional pest control services quoted me between R900 and R1500 to spray my entire house, lawn and inside. But they said ants are very hard to get rid of, only control for a while and ultimately, the best thing to do is seal all entry points and cracks and try to deal with infestations as they happen. Or if you really want to, you can do a foundation injections treatment which costs R5000 which has a 5 year guarrantee.

yeaaahh ... baby powder.

moved into new place, massive lawn, termites, ants of all types marching along the walls and inside the house, and spiders that would make you flinch.

none of them around any more, thanks to the miracle of Johnson's

Ant Trap works like a bomb for me. It's semi pet friendly. I normally put the holders under shelves or on top of counters where pets don't normally go. So even though poisonous it can be isolated to certain areas.
