Any idea exactly what this box is?

The below box is connected to my prepaid meter, if I flip the geyser off and on it flashes in the clear port and my geyser isn't turning on, I've already replaced the thermostat and element.

Wondering what this box does, I think it is supposed to cut electricity to the geyser when the stove is on or something, wondering if anyone knows and if it could be the reason the geyser isn't going on, prepaid meter shows 5w draw when the breaker to the geyser is on so I assume that box is drawing power just not giving it to the geyser? Does anyone have any idea if that is possible, what I could do or if I'm completely wrong any other ideas as to what could be the issue?

To add the geyser wasn't heating up about a week or two ago, but then suddenly worked again a day or so later, then after a day or two it was dead again and has been dead for about a week now, I'm thinking the frequent power cuts have a part to play.

Ripple relay control. It's old and faulty. Get your electrician to remove it permanently.

All it does take the feed from your breaker relay it to this box

And then attach the geyser to the box

So then the municipality sends a ripple over the network and switches your geyser off

Then later after peak they send a ripple over the network and geyser gets power again

ie they decide when your geyser may run or not based on network load

If it goes faulty and doesn't respond to ripples you have a geyser stuck in the off position
 
Thanks for the replies I did think it was a ripple relay, wasn't sure though as when I google it (going through a lot of pages) I only see completely different looking ones
 
open it .if its a ripple relay it will have live in from geyser cb ,switched live out to geyser and a neutral .

Of course it is a ripple relay, what else can it be? The one at a flat I used to stay at was exactly the same but made by Motorola.

oh wow your the champion arent you .it could be a load control relay as well .it could be a stove controller .it could be a borehole controller .it could be a controller for outside lights .

A buddy of mine said it could be for when something with a high power draw is turned on then it cuts the power to the geyser to compensate, I still have no clue exactly what it is.. I'll try get some pictures of its insides.
