Any Inline Skaters here?

I am just curious because that's the sort of skating one does when you're a teen, and it was also a bit of a fad as I remember. It died out and got replaced with other cooler things.
My parents couldn't afford anything other than education and now I can. It seems OP could be in similar situation. :)

It is vastly challenging to me as a mid-life adult but I am enjoying it so far.

Why is the OP doing this? Mid-life crisis?
lol, if I had the funds would get a Paramotor or a Harley davidson as a mid life crisis toy,
as I'm of limited means, AND trying to lose a bit of weight, this seems like a good idea.

so far all I have done is land up on my Behind, but beginning to suspect its the cr@ppy skates @surface mentioned,
if you dont get the right tool for the job, you suffer immensely

Found one wobble board during garage cleanup over weekend. I am going to try some stability single leg exercises every flipping day and see if it helps. Nothing beats doing skating every day but that is impractical but I am sure I can find 5-10 minutes every day for this.

Used to love Ice Skating at the Durban City Ice Rink (which is now closed indefinitely :-( )

In Line skating is quite similar, thought about getting into it a few times but really need to work on my balance, falling on ice is a lot easier than falling on tarmac. :X3:

I really enjoy it having picked up so late in my life. I am not good at it yet and it is quite a humbling experience when small kids (and my son) go past you making you wonder if you are moving at all.

Yeah, there is a great place on the Durban beach front promenade to skate, but yeah, quite a humbling experience. :X3:

OK but, didn't you know that you can lose quite a bit of weight keeping the Shul clean during the week before the weekend

Try get a inline hockey stick, you'll look cooler and it helps with balance.
Going down stairs backwards is way easier that forwards, and is actually very easy.
as if I need to look more dorky wearing all the guards and helmets,
and first I need to actually stand up with the skates without falling over

that is very hard to do, especially when I now discover I brought the WRONG skates to learn on,

Took a fall couple of hours ago when trying sharp turn in the rink. I don't wear elbow pads so elbow took a bit of hit. Continued for 2 more hours though. Seems alright so far.

Thinking of switching back to quad skates next session.

so sent my Inlines in to get the laces fixed up, told me 3 weeks turnaround:confused:

was trying to decide if I should try out a skate workshop with a pair of quad skates, that a company here in CPT rents out, along with some lessons, but decided against it, if I can manage on inlines, I should be able to manage on quads later on,
kind of like how learning on an automatic car vs on a manual car.

trying to decide if I should rather go like you did @surface get a Hard boot pair of skates, spend a bit more on skates this time,
maybe an older pair and use what Ive learned with the soft boot pair I have, where I fell over constantly on the correct (hard boot) set of skates. I guess you learn slowly, but do learn eventually

ever since I have started with this hobby, worn my pads all the time, as dorky and as thin looking as they seem, they more than earned their money a few times by now, yes they uncomfortable, yes they force you to walk weird, and yes, they look like they wont protect a egg from breaking,

but id rather mess up a set of pads than go for Knee surgery or screw the only pair of elbows I have,
I'll wait till I'm 90 for the osteoporosis to finish my joints off.

Switched to quad skates for one hour session but back to using blades. There is something about quad skates that I am not getting used to and I have no idea why it is like that. Skates seem very stable when trying on single leg exercises but blades seem very comfortable while skating even if they are a b8tch trying single leg exercises. It is not about quadskates that I have - that much I am sure.

p.s. This might explain it.

People assume quads are easier because the wheels are flat on the ground and there is no sideways tilt like a rollerblade. This is true, but the instability of quads is related to the much shorter wheel base front and back so roller skaters are far more likely to fall over backwards if they make a mistake.

Great progress over weekend. Tried couple of hours each on Saturday & Sunday in the garage and was able to do plow stop, forward & backward bubbles/lemons.

@Jet-Fighter7700 - come on man, we have similar challenges due to weight & other factors. Let us just keep on doing this every other day, if possible and I don't see how we can't improve.

right now am skateless, since they ripped the laces from the last time I tried to skate, making them unable to close, sent them in to be repaired told me I cant exchange them for the correct hard boot style, I need to actually make progress.

so will see in the next time I get my skates back, what I can do,
