Any must-have programs for Linux Mint you can recommend?

Canoscan 8800F. I just tried it with the new version of xsane and it seems to work now, but the interface is very clunky.

Clunky: the old gimp mentality of having a 1000 unattached windows to do a simple job.

Thanks, I will check out simple scan. I assume that it's a sane front end?

I know what you mean, gimp can be useful but is overkill for a "simple scan" (yep - sane front end) :)

AFAIK the PPAs was removed or can't be used with mint anymore.

You can always install kbuntu 15.something that comes with plasma 5 or arch and then add plasma 4:D
