Any news on Bitstream access? is it dead?
Is the idea that basically you'll be able to "work around" the telephone line rental?

News on bitstream access:
The Minister has pretty shoes
The ECA Amendment Act deadlines for comment has been suspended
Telkom/Businessday launched an attack on Clr Stukke
Neotel succeeded in a complaint based on Facilities Leasing against Telkom - the key issue underlying LLU in forms other than bitstreaming

Is the idea to work around telephone line rental?
Not really, at least not if Telkom has their way.

Has the November deadline been suspended or is it still on for that time ??
Does any one know if the ISPs have agreed on what bit stream equipment will be used ??

November deadline is still there, and I think we can expect Telkom to launch their IP Stream product by then. They have been trialing it for years.

thanks @rpm

would it effectively cut out the telephone line rental?

The IP stream product is a definite 'go'
Ive got some techies constantly working on our office' iPecs system, who work with the business department - and in our general discussions they always drop the IP stream tech is on its way, ie. you have an IP based phone in JHB - yet your source dialing number is CT, Durban / etc

So is IP stream totally on the ISP side? not related to any phone lines or rental prices being lowered? Just ISP price again dropping?

Its got nothing to do with price dropping directly.
What it does enable is proper control on the ISP side for things like IP assignment (Yay, proper static IPs at last) and IPv6 over ADSL (Not possible with current IP Connect).
Its essentially a transparent "pipe" where Telkom don't interfere whats in it, unlike IP Connect where they have full control over everything.

will Telkom's implementation of bitstream ensure IPv6 is possible? I mean is it guarenteed - or are "technical difficulties" a possibility?

The two are intertwined. If you can't utilise IPv6 on it (or any other layer 3 protocol), then by definition its not bitstream.

my assumption is that properly implemented bitstream allows any layer 3 protocol to work but this doesn't mean that Telkom's implementation is going to fully comply (and for that matter not be bitstream but hey ...).

IP Stream is not something Telkom invented, nor is it actually new, BT have been offering it for years.

So unless Telkom seriously deviate from what has been done, which I doubt since their common equipment vendor dictates what can & cant be done, IP stream should convey the full PPP frame (header & payload) between customer's CPEs and the ISP's LNSs. Thus all current & future layer 3 protocols supported by CPEs & LNSs should be usable.
