remind me what the risks of non-nutritive sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame are?
i'm talking about clinical proof here, with decent sample sizes conducted over decent periods of time, using established scientific methods.
why, after 20 odd years are these ingredients still being sold?
surely if they were linked to cancer, there would have been plenty of law suits in the USA and we'd have warning labels all over our soda cans, like cigarettes?
i'm not saying we should all have a spoonful of aspartame to start the day, i'm just wondering why we're still all so worried about it?
I think the problem with the whole aspartame story is, who do you believe. The corporations which are making billions off it, or the
self funded/poorly funded lab
rats(Not for sensitive viewers). An interesting documentary for those guys who enjoy
them about aspartame is "Aspartame - Sweet Misery a poisoned world". Goes into how it got pushed through the FDA for approvals etc, then into mass production.
There is also some suggestion that when aspartame metabolizes in your body it breaks down to form formaldehyde and formic acid (That ZING you get after eating a
handful of red ants). There is also a good possibility that formaldehyde is a carcinogen.
As for aspartame not being on warning labels, i think it is not simply cos the corporations would loose a train load of money, just like the cigarette companies did.
And when it comes to a company's profit being threatened, they tend to favor and fund studies that show their product is not harmful etc.
It is the consumers that need to wake up and question these things. Problem I think it has been questioned way too much, and people just dont care anymore,
therefore profits stay the same. The reason I dont feel comfortable with eating all this sweetener junk is that I'd rather have sugar, where I at
least have an eye dear where it came from, apart from a chemical made in a lab.
Also would rather take the safe route on things that studies that say "Linked to cancer/ caused cancer in bushmen/ wiped out ancient aztecs", and stay
the far away.
