Any RCHSA / RHCE guys on here?

Work has dropped Debian / Ubuntu (both of which I've used for years) in favour of Redhat and as such I need to get certified.

Looking at doing RHCSA then RHCE via the following exams:

RHCSA course + EXAM

ALTERNATIVELY is it worth it combining the two or is that looking for trouble?

A bit unrelated, but do you know why they went the Redhat route? I've always been interested to see how companies make these decisions since I myself also want to start moving away from windows server environments and more towards linux

A mix of things.

The company wants to use Redhat as they want paid for support and the fact that it passes regulation requirements easier I think.
 
Personally I like fedora and the whole yum, but I always thought companies would rather use debian as my understanding was always that debian as a bigger resource and library making it easier for the average company and redhat always uses cutting edge technology that might not always be as stable as a debian system?


Of course I can be completely wrong here?

But CentOS 7 ain't stable.

But back on topic I get your point I see cent and rhel are based on more stable builds compared to fedora
 
Just wrote RHCSA today. I have to say that it's the hardest entry level cert i've ever done - meaning its the lowest cert the vendor offers, but harder than all other initial vendor certs i've done.

I wrote to the wire and used all 2.5 hours allocated to me. It's a hands on lab.

You need to get all items that require a reboot out of the way early, that way you can ensure your system is good to go and stable when its time to do the final reboot to check all is well.

2 people I wrote with didn't do this and as a result their machines failed to boot. They didn't have enough time to fix and they failed.

Here's to hoping I passed. Need to wait up to 3 days for results though...
 
Just found out I passed RHCSA.

216/300 - so I just made it in, but still I passed.

Bloody hard exam for an entry level cert. Next up RHCE!
 
I have been using RHEL and CentOS for many many years.
The support isnt that great but then I dont really need it anyway.
most companies use it for compliance reasons though.
I think I need to look into those exams, should be fun.
 
Does anyone have a recommended cert sequence?
I'm thinking of the lpi route.

I did LPIC-1 first.

It's great for theory as it covers a distribution agnostic way of doing things. It however isn't hands on like the Red Hat certs and as such I feel it isn't nearly as valuable from an employer point of view, but for theory and finding out why Linux does the things it does, its great!

Well done, I got 260/300 and honestly found the LPI102 harder mainly because of the focus on theory and IP. LPI really needs to be more hands on.
Have you done the CE yet? I unfortunately wasted my time this year on the LPI's and didn't do the CE which my buddy and colleagues said I should've done.

I couldn't get a date for RHCE that suited me.

Thus I opted to do LPIC2 (mainly to keep my LPIC1 valid - even though I personally don't value these certs highly).

I've booked to write the RHCE in Feb - so i'm starting with my studies for that now - although tbh i kind of feel it will be easier than the RHCSA - mainly as I deal with ISCSI, mail, dns, sql etc on a daily basis.

The ACL's and the like in RHCSA are things I don't often deal with.

You're lucky, I don't deal with those often, whereas the SA stuff I do :)

When are you planning on doing the RHCE?

Are you based in CPT by any chance? I wouldn't mind forming a study group of some sort if people are available.

Next year probably March, I'm based in Joburg :(
