This thread would generally be used more by overclockers.

I'm just curious to know what is the most optimal way to air-cool a case.

I was always under the presumtion that the more air you blow out of your case the better. It that right?

Also, is having a fan on the side of the case any better than having a fan in the front or back?

Would the most optimal choice be to just leave your case open?

I run 1 at the back and 1 at the front of my cheapo case. Seems to keep everything cool I think 1 on the side for pulling/pushing cool air onto your CPU :)

leaving your case open will only collect more dust.

I like those funnel trumpet that extends to the outside of your case from the cpu...Looks like a turbo and works well to.
Dont know about the dust though:o

Can't remember exactly how this goes again, but to create a negative pressure inside the case(which is what you want) its better to have 2 fans blowing air out and one bringing air in.
As far as cooler go, here is a favourite of mine-->> Thermalright ultima 90 & Review.

having a cooler makes no difference. My personal view on this.
I have no special cooling things in my box and it works fine, games all run smooth on medium.

if you have 600 bucks to spend buy an aerocool zero degree or extreme 3t case

big 25cm to blow air in, fan on the back to suck air out and fan in the front to suck air out

you dont get better than this in terms of aircooling

half a kilo...!
haven't closed my case for a few years, there's a little bit of comfort in seeing a sub 20 mobo temp in the middle of winter

in summer though, your box is going to get hot with no cool air coming in

the best cooling though which i used was a big air cooler and no side panel

this way the air can escape :)

Actually a properly cooled and vented case should run cooler with the side panel on than the case just completely open. A feat that few of us achieve.

True. But it help when you are going to overclock your CPU. Otherwise the stock cooler is fine.

@random717. Actually this is still quite a bit lighter than some of the other coolers. I have seen ones that are almost double that.

zenbaas your telling me 3 12cm fans setup in a closed box on a 30 degree summer day will run cooler than a big air fan blowing on 3 with the side panel open

never

put your case outside the window... and run your keyboard and mouse and monitor through the window. Then close the window as far as you can.

I meant this thread more for overclockers as i do not think that standard computers really have any heat problems. Personally i run my case with a side fan blowing in and the front and back fan blowing out and i leave the other side panel open to let more air out.

No killa im not telling you this. I am reciprocating what i have read in various forums(/websites) that have dealt specifically with airflow patterns in cases and with cases open.To be honest a lot of them have found that a big ass fan on the side of the case has a habit of trapping air(through turbulence if i remember right) and actually increasing temps. The best config a lot of the time ended up being a straight push-pull config from front to back with the side vent closed.

I'm sure there may be cases where it would be cooler to have your 1m fan blowing on your bolted down case, but for a day to day use when it has been done properly it should at leist run just as cool.

If your CPU fan is a stock fan that pulls in air from the top...then one side fan pushing air into the CPU fan is best....better than an open case even.

negative zenbaas

i can tell you now its rubbish

i had a case with lots of fans and good airflow and in summer my e6300 @ 3.2ghz was idling at 62

i put on a big fan set to 3 and it dropped to under 50

dont ever think the power of massive fan blowing in cool air will be hot

best is water cooling which i eventually got

watercooling is just amazing
