Any tips for ripening an avocado?

I bought 2 avos which I *thought* were ripe, they even felt ripe!

One was fine and I used it, but the second one turns out to be still quite hard. Unfortunately they were both stored in my fridge immediately after I bought them.

Any way in which I can ripen the second avo?

Thanks :)

put it next to a banana....in a dark place, like a bag.

or start massaging it.

Wrap it and 4 banana's (on the 4 "corners") in newspaper, not the plastic type that adverts are typically printed on, and put the package somewhere where the temperature is 24-28 degrees C, but no direct sunlight. You can also try the warming drawer overnight, without the bananas, but with the newspaper.

Edit : My GF insists that putting it into a bag of flour helps it to heat itself up as it ripens, but I have not tried that.

O that last line is classic :p

Dark cupboard and wait it out, you could put your warmer draw on and put the avo inside to speed it up but i prefer to wait. Also find a shop that sells good quality avo's because you should find ripe ones this time of year. Spar and woolies avo's are shocking.

We have this nice little fruit shop with most amazing avo's, smooth as butter and ripe :). Bought a box yesterday.

The issue is really whether I can remove the avo from the fridge and now put it into a dark cupboard/wrap it in newspaper/etc?

Will the change in temperature from cold to roomtemp not have some adverse effect (other than ripening it? :))

Don't leave it in the sun...

Put it with other ripening fruit at room temperature. Esp. apples, bananas etc. The ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas which triggers the ripening (in nearby fruit - this is so that all the fruit on a tree ripens at a similar time).

edit. you could get one of these: http://www.catalyticgenerators.com/index1.html

brown paper bag in the cupboard or just leave them in the cupboard also both work, i think putting them next to a banana will work too but i have not tried that one yet.

Keeping it in the fridge is not a very good idea, damn will take forever to ripen

We put our Avos in the same drawer as the Dish Towels.
This way you do not forget the Avos as on most days we open this drawer to get a clean towel for the kitchen.
