I bought Audio-Technica M50X headphones from Sound Select (soundselect.co.za) on 31 Dec. Credit card payment took place through MyGate, and I received an sms immediately for the amount going off my account. Product was received quickly and I was perfectly happy.

Then early this morning I get another sms for the same amount going off my account, and the balance clearly shows double the amount has been deducted accumulatively.

I rang Sound Select and they were friendly and helpful, and said that their MyGate logs only show the amount being received once. Apparently the amount was reserved on the 31st and settled today. They also confirmed my related query that they do not have the ability to initiate billing on amounts already received even if they were so inclined. They gave me the authorisation code for the transaction and said they'll help however they can, but that they surely aren't responsible.

I then phoned Capitec and they said there's no issue with their systems, and that the amount has been charged twice. They've started an investigation and said it could take two weeks or more. They said the second payment might be in the process of showing up in Sound Select's transaction logs for MyGate.

One weird thing is that the reference for the first charge was 4 Tune Records CC Cape Town ZA, and the reference for the second charge is Sound Select Johannesburg GPZA. Sound Select said that the first name is their legal name and the second their trading name, but that they're the same entity with only one bank account and MyGate account. I'm confused as to why the billing names would be different.

So it seems all fingers are pointing at MyGate, but how can a trustworthy payment gateway screw up like that? Anyone else had similar weird issues like this?

My gate charged my car once, left a nasty ding

I bought some supplement powder from a supplier in December, the mygate paygate had problems as the first two were declined by them but accepted by the bank ( including 3dsecure ). The follow up transaction went through fine the following day so it looked like a glitch on just the one day.

Google does my head in with failed payments. Can't recall how many times I've tried to spend $1-2 on apps and then had Google claim that the payment method is invalid. The only fix is to access my payment methods, delete the card and add it back again. As a percentage of all payments it's relatively small, but still a high enough occurrence to be mightily annoying.
