My wife and I will be there from Thurs - Sunday next week. What's the best part of the island to stay at? Any recommendations on relatively affordable accommodation?

I went there when i was rather young, from what i do remember, if you can dive you better go diving or otherwise go snorkling (i did the snorkling) was to young to dive. Other than that i dont remember much :P

Went there on honeymoon a few years back and it was AWESOME! I believe the resort was called Breezes.

Wow, Breezes looks fantastic. Slightly out of our budget though, as this trip is completely spur-of-the-moment. Looking at max $80pps.

Sorry :o

While you're there get one of the locals to teach you to play Boa, grab a few cocktails, and just unwind.

Enjoy!

resorts up north generally more pricier but also better equipped. i stayed south, can't remember hotel's name though. fairly comfy . 7 years ago?
don't forget malaria prevention tablets. see your doctor.

To the OP:

It is a lovely island. We were there approx 4 years ago.

Almost on the equator, so it's incredibly hot and humid.

We stayed in the south, much more quiet than the nothern parts.

Try to do some exploring of Stonetown. Stunning old Arabic architecture and the quaintest little shops. If you are by any means into cooking, try to buy some spices - much cheaper than here! Oh and bring me some saffron :D

No 1 or No 2 ? :)

Hire a fisherman to take you out for shallow snorkeling - remember to specify shallow.
Provided it's not the season for the red stingy things, those reefs are alive and colorful and shallow.

Hmmm, I went there about 3 years ago (the year before that, I was on Tanzania). For the life of me, I can't remember where on the island I was on...

However, I really enjoyed it there hey, we went when it was just coming to an end of the Tourist session because it was cheap and also because it wasn't so damn hot.

There's no shortage of activities though, there's scuba, snorkeling ( both of which I loath because of claustrophobia), but also jet skying, and all that stuff. Nice place to just sit down and loaf :p.

The only real problem I had was getting to my hotel, as it was really quite a mission, but otherwise, it was awesome.

We went last year for our Honeymoon. Went south stayed at resort that was named Coral Rock. The owner is a SA'n. We enjoyed it and ate like kings. We used to plod along the beach and ate at different restaurants. We snorkled mostly.

Is there much in the way of duty free electronics at Zanibar Airport?

I saw that for a 8 night stay in Zanzibar it is about R10K all inclusive (flights etc), and the other option is 8-10night stay to Phuket also for under R10K (flights included) with . Anyone been to Phuket or both? Which is better or are they pretty much the same? Just seems that everyone goes of to Zanzibar for holiday because it is not that expensive.....Phuket just sounds a bit more exotic but I guess both have their pros and cons.

Not quite Heathrow then?
Not quite. :) When I was there the baggage claim area consisted of a large window they tossed your bags out of :D

If you fly via Dar it's a little better . . . but not much. :)

Nice. Flying into Dar out of ORThambo and looking to buy an iPod Touch.

done both, phuket wins hands down.

Obviously these are different places, most obviously Zanzibar is a lot more relaxed as there is a lot less to do. If you hit Phuket you can take it completely easy, or you can jam out with your clam out in Patong, and booze /club it up till 6am. Shopping, experience wise, phuket is no.1 for me between those 2.

now i want to go back to thailand...damnit.
