Im not clued up on filing in these forms. Turns out I am to be audited. They have asked me to make a scan of my IRP5 and submit. Kinda silly considering they have it on record. Have submitted all the documentation.

I went and asked around, it seems that 2/3 of our staff here got audit requests. I wonder what happened.

Random my arse.

Been audited 4 years out of the last 5 :D

Yes, sorry, I meant - audited. I'm not sure if SARS simply requesting further documents is an audit as such.

I'm also struggling with this distinction.

Are "Submit supporting documents" and "Audited" the same thing?

There are a few levels...

There are verifications and audits.

Verifications I am told is when the system decides that a human needs to review the return and check for anything out of the ordinary. This is what most people go through when they say they are being "audited" because SARS do not tell you which it is.

Audits are when they dig deep and scrutinize line by line and may even seek 3rd party confirmations of deductions claimed for etc. This normally takes weeks to be completed.

From experience, when you are audited it takes exactly 30 days for feedback/payout.

An audit is an expensive process for SARS. 99.9% of people who think they have been audited have only been selected for verification. A true audit would involve a lifestyle questionaire, a complete examination of your financial affairs, assets, bank accounts, etc. Basically the equivalent of a full cavity search of your finances. SARS would usually only save this treatment for high net-worth individuals who they suspect of tax evasion.

If it doesn't come through, will I really need to go there?

You could phone them.

Last year I had trouble getting my money back due to penalties I paid way back in 2010, which they refunded me, but I still had to prove that I paid it. Couldn't get them to understand that they wanted to pay it back so why do I need to prove that I pad it and how do thhey expect me to remember when I paid it in 2010 so I had to go in.
