I am looking for a AMD processor to into a cheap cheap AM2/AM2+ mobo

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/CPU-6-socket-am2-plus-phenom-ii-compatibility-alert.aspx

AMD Athlon II X2 240, 2MB L2 Cache, AM3, 2.8Ghz R 495 excl. R 564 incl.
AMD Athlon II X2 245, 2MB L2 Cache, AM3, 2.9Ghz R 585 excl. R 666 incl.
AMD Athlon II X2 250, 2MB L2 Cache, AM3, 3.0Ghz R 585 excl. R 666 incl.

Under the current economics, can anyone suggest the optimal processor to go for? I'd like to try keep it for under 1000 if possible.

SO far, what I got, the best bang for buck is the following from pcint

AMD Athlon II X2 240, 2MB L2 Cache, AM3, 2.8Ghz R 495 excl. R 564 incl.
AMD Athlon II X2 245, 2MB L2 Cache, AM3, 2.9Ghz R 585 excl. R 666 incl.
AMD Athlon II X2 250, 2MB L2 Cache, AM3, 3.0Ghz R 585 excl. R 666 incl.

I havent looked at the other X2's and Phenoms, perhaps someone sees a cheaper and bigger bang for buck somewhere?

PhenomII would be the best, but they start off at over R1,000.
The closest there would be the PhenomII X2 545 or the 550 Black Edition.

What are you going to use it for?
CPU speeds are miles ahead of actual usage.
I am happily playing games, (GTA4), creating DVD's, typing the odd letter, browsing the web and running 4 VM's in VMware workstation on a Athlon X2 and it's idling along.
Spend your money on RAM and a screen card

cool thanx, just checking this mobo out, only paid like R149 for it at esquire today..lol, it seems its max is 65W processors, which would mean it can only handle the older phenom I or Athlone X2, so I guess that pretty much seals that decision...lol
Hey, well, I just built a box for like +-R1100 = mobo R149, 2GB RAM R397, X2 Athlone 240 R564, casing R199...lol

any of those duals are fine. but I think AMD's best processor currently is the Athlon II X4 620.

Its a quad core @ 2.6ghz and can be had for R1100.

beats the pants off any Intel at that price.

Software support for multithreading is improving all the time, so the quad will get put to good use over the next few years.

agreed, but this is really just going to be a download/woker/router pc, not even buying a GPU for it, as I am going to remote desktop or SSH into it to administer it, so I guess the X2 is almost already overkill, but yup, I am totally in agreement with u, the X4 at that price is fantastic as oppossed to the intel at 1400 same spec.....thanx for the input guys, I thinkthis one was easy, primarily because my Mobo is so restricting ....hehe, but I dont mind R149, cant go wrong with that

The Athlon X2 550 BE can have its 2 extra cores unlocked to essentially become an X4 on certain (higher end AM3) mobos and since its a BE it can be easily overclocked above its stock 3.1GHz

Great bang for buck CPU if you're really looking for performance.

thats if its cores are not defective, and thats a big IF, also not all 550's are unlockable.

then a quad athlon 2x4 wont work as it is a 95w cpu, are you sure thats an am2+ board and not an older am2 ?

Its definitely an AM2+ board, but a quad is also more than twice what I wanted to spend, remember this is very very cheap, this is my true budget system :) See how much I can squeeze from it.

I think it can handle bigger processors but the documentation definitely states only Phenom1 or Athlone Dual core or 65W processors. It def didnt mention it can handle Quad core, but perhaps it can, I will have to make million x sure of it before I plug anything expensive into this crap mobo :)

From what I can tell right now, the biggest processor I can put in is probably only an X2 Athlone, just picked up a 2.8G for R564 all incl. - pcint. Pretty cheap!

Got this in my gaming machine runs sweet :D.

crap yeah, I shouldve just spent the extra 100 and got a 3.0Ghz, but I've overspent already on electronics, and my idea was this PC is just a el cheapo

Seriously though, would one even notice the difference between a 2.8Ghz, 2.9Ghz and a 3.0Ghz processor?

seems this el cheapo crappy board can actually handle some decent processors

but I already have two quad PC's, so a third that gets used for just InternetOfficeMailDownloads will be a bit of a waste. I see even the on board graphics can do HD resolutions...huh

but something is screwy, on the box it says 65W processor support and on the site it says 95W....so which is it? And am I brave enuf to test the 95W theory :)
Ah, I checked the CPU list http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/motherboard_view.asp?productid=566&proname=PA74M5 and none of the processors are more than 65W, so then its no more than 65W support

Nope, you may notice cache not 100mhz. Benchmarks may show the extra power but daily chores you will not notice it.
