Anyone know how to network a usb modem to wired network?

I am new to this 3G modem story. Have a wired network through a telkom router for 3 home computers. Don't have any telkom lines in the area and 3G coverage only from one bedroom. I need to be able to access the other computers to the internet via a laptop which whill basically have to act as ther server via a usb modem.

Each time I try to set up an internet connection from the other computers windowsXP tries setting up a dialup connection which it obviously can't find- usb wireless modem. All computers are able to read each other...just not the connection which is mobile.

Can anyone come up with any ideas how to address this without making the entire network wireless as none of the computers have wireless cards?
 
In your network connections on the notebook, right click on the 3G connections and go to advanced tab.

There is a option Internet Connection Sharing which you can select. I think xp then automatically configures the notebook as a DHCP server as well.

Then on the other machines just set the tcp ip properties to use DHCP.

This is assuming your router doesn't act as a DHCP server as well.
 
no DHCP has been deactivated on the router. Well the problem still remains - other computers see connection on laptop as dial-up and try to use it as a dialup...
 
Funny, at home my puters has the notebook set as the gateway (Done with the DHCP on the notebook) and no problems.

They don't acually see any connection ON the laptop, just the laptop as a gateway.

Also, the dashboard software sometimes disables your other network connections when you connect to 3g with the dashboard.
 
@cilla, is this the Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem or another USB device?, and what is the router that you mentioned?

Well when i set mine up it never actually detected a modem or anything. I set up a new internet connection and made it a "always on connection" as it will come via your LAN/cables and not from a modem. From the "client" pc angle it only sees the laptop as the "server", it doesn't care about the modem, same way when you are at work on a lan, you don't set up a modem do you?

That's very important to set up on each computer [basically telling each pc which computer has the internet connection].

BUT, i see something about a router there. Then your router is probably the gateway, and then on your router you have to set it up to point to your laptop [thus ITS gateway is the laptop?]

Ive never had a problem with ICS, except the lack of personal configuration. But its so straight forward and simple... works every time for me.
