Hi guys,

Well i've finally stopped my cr@ppy job and persued a career in something i would have interest in doing but its seems i have made a mistake with one of my modules.

For the 1st semester ( according to the calender ) i was enrolled in both Intro to programming 1 ( deals with basic concepts of the C++ language ) and also intro to programming 2 ( deals with objects and the object-orientated enviroment ). After reading the tutorial letters they strongly advice canceling intro 2 if i have had no previous background experience in programming ( which of course i have not ) but i can't cancel it without forfeiting the fees so ive decided to tackle it and rather take my chances so my question is...

How hard is it to grasp the basic concepts since now it looks like i have to do 2 1yr modules in one year?

edit: mod please delete one of the threads, IE is acting up again and double posted it.

Are the courses running concurrently? If not, then you shouldn't have a problem because you'd need to know procedural programming quite well before you can move on to object orientation. It seems to me that they would teach you procedural in Intro1. If they do run concurrently, then you may be in a bit of poop :D

Get yourself Learn c++ in 24 hours or 30 days etc. That's how I picked it up and been living the good coding life ever since:D .

(Ok it's not as easy as I make it sound, but it's a start)

Thats what im worried about cos they both 1yr modules so im assuming they do run concurrently. The f up comes that they list both intro1 and intro2 as part of your first year studies so i applied for it also thinking that into's can't be too hard... i only found out that it was a mistake after i regestired --- paid and then was able to receive my tutorial letters which stated the problem with having both in one year.

Bit peeved that they didnt tell me before hand, and im not wadting R780, so i guess im gonna do it... better trying to pass and fail than just throwing the money away.

Why won't they return the fees. They should never have registered you for both courses - so follow that angle. Which institution is this anyway??

EDIT: Wait are they running simultaneously?

They didn't register me, i did a web application but on the calender under first semester courses is listed both Intro1 + Intro2 so i registered for both.
Ive tried all the angles possible, called them, went to the parrow campus and enquired but they all said i cant cancel without financial implication. Also on their website it states the same, and swapping it out for another first semester module means forfeiting previous fees and paying an additional for the swap.

Im doing it through unisa part time.

edit: been thinking about it quite alot and preferably want to keep the stress down and the workload since im still going to be working aswell... also ill need to pass everything if im to get a bursary from my dad's organisation. WOuld it rather be advisable that i cancel intro2 given some of your knowledge on object orientation?

Intro to pramming 1 ( basic concepts of C++ ) and intro to programming 2 ( objects and object orientation )

Oh I see, well actually Tuks does the same thing COS130 (Introduction) and COS110 (more advanced) run together :(

Anyway are you sure if you de-register you get no money back?

If that is the case then why not just try?

I can advice a few books and some things you can focus on to get you going if you decide to keep going...

It shouldn't really be a problem as the basics are not hard to grasp. Perhaps get yourself a good book and read through it before. I wouldn't recommend any C++ book other than "The C++ Programming Language" by Stroustrup. If you're gonna read a book about the language, it may as well have been written by the same guy who created the language.

After having completed my qualification with C++, I have looked at C# and quite like it.

If you have not programmed before, I suggest the C++ Bible, as it contains nice explanations for various classes and methods.

Im working on a project that uses C++ for targeting firmware, and C# for the front end (GUI) and user control.

C++ is very efficient - sometimes a b**ch, and VERY fast (no MSIL need).
C# is very dynamic, a typical RAD language.

If you can master C++, you will have the world at your feet.

Personally I found "Thinking In C++" by Bruce Eckel the best book out there (and it's free :D ) but you have to have the basic OO topics down before you can even approach the book.

Covers everything that's part of the ISO c++ library.

That's for the guys that didn't have IT at school, right?

Yeah COS130 is for students that didn't have Computer Studies in school, runs during the semester but it also has a summer school that's running now. Usually IT Students do it during summer school (provided they didn't have the correct symbol in Computer Studies or have it at all, else they are exempt) and Actuarial students take it during the semester but if the pressure is too much they can take it during the semester but not at the same time as COS110, so they do stop you from taking it at the same time...

Bit stupid of them letting the Students take both @ the same time @ Unisa but anyway

I wondered what all the students were doing in the IT building on Tuesday :p

Yep, starting this year :) B.IT

Hah, sweet man! I thought you would be older than me :p

Watch out for WTW114 it's probably the hardest 1st year IT modules unless you a math genius ;)

No way dude, BSc(CS) does the same amount of math! According to last years EBIT Syllabi book you do WTW114, WTW115, WTW126, WTW285.
Those are the same ones you must do for BSc(CS)
