The battery in a small home / office type APC UPS needs replacing. Is it OK to use a generic battery like those for alarm systems, or is it better to stick to APC parts?

I replaced my batteries with generic branded ones two years ago and they are still going strong, I have a 5kva APC UPS. Cost me R5000 back then to replace them all, not sure what the price is currently per battery.

Thanks, that is a positive indication that this will work. BTW, mine is a small 350 VA unit for an HP microserver.

Replaced my genuine APC batteries with generics at about a third of the price.

They also keep my system alive for several times longer than the originals.

We always got the Panasonic ones from a batter supplier. Good quality and price.

Where are you guys getting your batteries from? I have a 2kva RCT UPS that just has a blinking red light. I hope it's the batteries & not something else...

Thanks guys, I will go and pick up one of the house alarm type batteries.

Can't remember the name of the place but in durbs it was in pinetown in the main road opposite Honda & police station. Hunt the web for a company that specialises in batteries as they are usually cheaper than your average hardware shop & security company.

Thanks, I'll remove the batteries & shop around. Forgot to mention I'm in cape town

Look at the size of the battery, if I remember a 9 Ah battery is the same physical size as the more common 7.2 Ah so it will fit, put a 9 Ah in there, it will give you a little more juice.

6Ah to 9Ah batteries usually share the same size. Attention should be taken to a brand and terminal type. Typically it comes with 7mm terminals, but it could have 4mm terminals too.

For alarm system I have no specific preferences, but when chosing a battery for heavy load like entrance gate motor or for UPS, I would chose 7Ah over 9Ah version and a good brand. It may lasts many times longer than a higher capacity version or a cheap brand.

Thanks. I have just bought a 9Ah battery which is the same size as the original. According to the specs on the APC website this is the correct rating for this battery.

Stuck an old 100AH car battery on my apc ups, working like a charm. Lasts a lot longer than the prior 20 minutes.
