I took the plunge as the exchange rate is ok, and downloaded Aperture 3 from the Apple Apps site. I paid R540.79 for the $79.99 application. I think this is really good value for money in SA.
My only question is what happens if one has to reinstall - as no file is downloaded and no Product Key is provided. It also is not reflected as a purchase. Any ideas?

The purchase is recorded in the cloud with your apple username and password. In fact you can now load that copy of aperture on (up to?) five Macs just by logging into the App store with your credentials.

A receipt is usually mailed to the mail account you opened you iTunes account with. The mail will have your order details as well as a product key... Have you checked your mail yet?

Edit: And what Bwana said...

I found the purchase on the Apps Store under purchases. Thanks

Wow! This is a fantastic piece of software!!
I am about to remove Photoshop Elements 9 off this iMac and use it on my Win 7 laptop only.
Features, features, and more features. That's without any plug-in's.

Or the bloat... ;)

Yeah, it really is :) I rarely have to fire up PS these days.

Funny, I just installed PSE :) It is the trial, and I only installed it to poke around with the latest ACR, but after a quick play I decided that it does all the photoshoppy stuff I want, which it didn't do the last time I tried it (early versions), so I might end up buying it.

If I didn't still do a lot of graphic design work I'd be hard pressed to justify the price tag for PS upgrades.

I can't justify the price for Photoshop at all. The only things I ever do in it is fix distortion (falling buildings effect), the odd panorama (about once every two years), or draw a square around something to point out to someone - all of which PSE 9 can do.

I am well impressed with ACR though. It takes 12800 ISO from being OK when there's no other way to get the shot to being quite usable.

Can't say I've been impressed by the 7D over 2500iso, maybe ACR will change my mind.

Maybe you're just used to the 1DmkIII being better.
You think I'm setting the bar a bit high then? :)

I did some side by side Aperture vs PS high ISO tests last night - they certainly produce vastly different grain patterns but I won't know until I do some prints which I actually prefer.

I couldn't say - I don't have a 1D mark anything :)

I don't mind grain at all. In the film days I always asked for matte prints. The noise that bothers me is the colour noise. Not the fine red grain - that's easy to deal with. The red stains. The 50D is full of them. I haven't seen any from the 7D yet except at 12800.

But it's early days, I haven't done any real shooting with it yet :)

I have upgraded to a second hand nikon D700 and I am blown away by it's ability to handle Hi ISO settings. Still playing, but very impressed. Just love full frame digital photography, especially using good glass. Even an amateur like me can turn out decent shots, without too much editing. I shoot in RAW and JPEG but mostly just use the JPEG files.

Noise reduction

Did Apple tweak the noise reduction in 3.2.1. I hate what they've done to crop and rotate but my high ISO images seem cleaner.

I didn't notice it but now that you say it, it does appear there is less red banding.
