Any old time Aperture users here? I assume we're all pretty much in the same boat, i.e.:
- a back catalogue of photos that we want to maintain access to but don't necessarily want to port to a new program
- Newer cameras that produce raw files that Aperture doesn't recognise.

How are you guys dealing with these problems?
Do you keep older machines with older OSX around? How long do you expect this to last (hardware failure being the concern)?
What do you use now?
Have you migrated libraries to a new application? Experiences?

For my part, I have two older laptops that I'm keeping on older versions of OSX to maintain access to my Aperture library. I'm thinking of buying some older Mac Minis that I can install Yosemite on, just in case.

At some point in 2015, probably once I bought my first camera that wasn't recognised, I started using Lightroom. I don't think Lightroom CC was a thing yet). So now all of the last three years worth of photos are in legacy Lightroom, which now also doesn't recognise the newer cameras.

When Adobe launched Lightroom CC, they stated that the stand-alone Lightroom won't go away. Given that they wasted no time at all breaking that promise, I absolutely do not trust them to not discontinue Lightroom Classic CC, and I don't want to be stuck with a program I have to pay a subscription to. So I'm not sure where I'm going to go from here.

Note: I just found out that Aperture does install from the App Store on High Sierra *if* you previously bought it on the App Store. Not sure yet how well it works, but as long as I can at least export browse my images and export metadata, it's enough for me.

I still use Aperture, daily in fact.

I did have an issue not long ago with it not recognising the dng files from my Mavic but then none of the apple photo apps did. I upgraded to high Sierra and it all worked again.

Good to know it picks up the OS support for newer formats. This is the one dick move that Adobe made - Lightroom Classic doesn't support the newer cameras, even if you have the newest Camera Raw installed.

Have you encountered any issues with Aperture under Sierra?

Thanks PaulMark, I'm aware of the plugin. Just not sure I want to go all-in with Lighroom, given Adobe's moves. I'm not keen on a subscription if I can avoid it.

I'm taking some time to see how Aperture works on High Sierra. Haven't bumped into any problems yet, but there are some tasks I haven't checked yet.
