I've noticed lately the amount of flack Apple have received for not implementing a traditional multitasking system in iOS4. It kind of grates me to be honest... I think it's pretty unfair.

My 2 cents on the issue can be found here

In it’s most simplest terms, Apple charges a premium on it’s products in return for managing your expectations thereof. Think about it.

Yeah, Apple gets flack for the lack of multitasking and WM, Symbian and Android market app killers cause their devices don't close inactive apps... 6 of the one half a dozen of the other.. One mans poison is another mans bread..

So basically your argument is that iphone users are too stupid to manage the applications they have running on their iphone so its better that they have limited multitasking (otherwise the phone will slow down and crash)?

No not stupid... They just couldn't be bothered to.

Of course ;) because they cant.

Lol, I see it more as a case of, in as much as I have zero interest in learning how to use a sowing machine, so to are there millions of users who couldn't be bothered to learn how to use a phone properly. Different people with different priorities. A lack of interest, doesn't make you stupid. Apple are, in a way, catering to this market.

So all iphone users want the same limited experience as you? Some iphone users like me prefer the bike without training wheels.

There are three types of user in this context in my view:
1. People who just use the phone without even understanding how multitasking works - the iPhone is good for these people
2. the "geek" who loves playing around with technical features - All mobile devices, but they feel limited on iPhone
3. The technical individual who prefers convenience over technical features - Comfortable on all phones, including iPhone

The point is, the decision lies with the user, whether Apple has "caught" your attention or not with their amazing marketing techniques, the user must decide. If you don't like the multitasking system of the iPhone, then don't use it, or use it, and don't complain :D

Im guessing 99% of MyBB uses are either 2 or 3.

No not all,but I think the vast majority are. I don't think you're Apple's target market... You're more Androids market no?

Where can I get a sowing machine for someone who can't sow or has no interest in sowing?

Besides if you're not going to use a phone, why not just buy one of these R200 cheapies. They can be used for phoning, smsing and have all the features someone who couldn't be bothered on learning to use a phone properly?

I do agree with your initial point and apple has their place in the market, but this post doesn't make that much sense to be honest.

Isn't that exactly the point? Apple are making a product that can be seen as either a) having training wheels for people who aren't familiar with things we take for granted as "geeks" or b) a simplified system for people who chose usability over functionality and expandability.

There is no right or wrong on this issue, there's only different.

You don't understand multitasking in IOS 4. It's multitasking, exactly the way Android and all the other phones do it. The App remains in memory, and gets switched to instantly.

I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to say?

So does Android and all the others pause the graphical display on the GPS software (keeping it from using unnessesary memory) but keep the voice promts to "turn left ahead" active in the background?

What Apple did with multitasking I do not think has been done before on a phone (I cant speak for Android). It "pauses" all unnessesary parts of an app, but keeps the vital parts active in the background, not the whole app.

Well that's a good thing, otherwise you just use up the battery unnecessarily. And yes Android also pauses backgrounded apps. In fact all the Cellphone OS'es probably do.
