Bad news for iPhone thieves

Apple's recently released iOS 17.3 beta 1 boasts more advanced security features to prevent thieves from accessing an iPhone's data, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The new Stolen Device Protection capabilities require that users authenticate themselves through Face ID or Touch ID to perform certain actions that could have serious consequences for the user.

factory resetting should not require biometrics, unless the phone has been marked as lost by the user.

If Apple does it otherwise, they just want to kill the second hand market to sell more new iphones. Apple wants working phones to end up in landfill or crushed to be "recycled"

Anyone disposing of their phone can log in remotely and remove it from their account. If factory resetting requires approval from the registered owner then I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Rather it gets crushed and recycled than stolen and resold.

thats Apples business model, Dont fix it EVER!
toss it and buy another, and dont forget to add a $19 cloth to wipe it with.

“We receive [4,000 to 6,000] locked iPhones per month,” Peter Schindler, the founder and owner of Colorado-based electronics recycler and refurbisher The Wireless Alliance, told iFixit. Due to the Activation Lock not being properly deactivated, the iPhones are “parted out or scrapped,” instead of being refurbished and returned to the market as perfectly functioning devices.

And? It's unfortunate but if you make it easy for them, you make it easy for criminals. I'd rather my data was safe.

its a gigantic waste of perfectly usable devices,
anyway Apple stores most of the important data in the cloud,

not to mention I have managed to find people to remove Icloud lock before and restore a perfectly functional Iphone
so how much security do you have really?

How does the ability to factory reset a device that is NOT stolen, threaten your data?

Also would you be willing to pay for disposal of your iphone as an ecological tax?

Cry me a river. 5,000 unusable activation locked iPhones as opposed to some 20 Million brand new unit sales per month.

Yeah, pure greed. Apple not sending those 5,000 units back into the refurbished market will bankrupt them.

You people whinge about everything Apple related.

Nothing here is that an iphone cannot be cleared and sold secondhand. It is merely locking down stollen devices, preventing unauthorised password changes/reset without biometrics and a delay of an hour if you not at a common geo location.
Nothing about ewaste here but security.

You need to be more upfront when it comes to your relationship with Apple. A history with the iPhone 5 or 6 has little bearing on today's security features.

Agree 100%

think Ive explained my Hatred to death at this point, but maybe you didn't read it.

fair point, have owned or got given a Ipad air 2, Iphone 12 and my glorified hotspot Iphone 6s
never brought any Apple products in the past, never had much of an opinion until I got given a 6 and then upgraded it to a 12
coming from android exclusively, never had a macbook or Ipod even.

and my first thought on using it was what a load of garbage, honestly!
why would anybody pay money for this trash is beyond me, why would you purposefully buy this when so much better alternatives exist?

its kind of like the opinions some people have coming from a S-Class/Fortuner to a Citi golf as a rental,
so even with an extended time with one of their idiotphones, like the 6s I have right now,

still dont see the appeal, even my Samsung S4 mini is 1000% better than this, even my S7 is better than this.

this that people love them and defend them constantly baffles me, why would people do that?

It's not about your access to your data, it's about thieves access to your data... and making theft less lucrative.
