Apple could spend $1 billion to keep iPhone screen edge

Apple Inc. looks like it may put down close to $1 billion just to keep its devices at the leading edge.

Japan Display Inc., one of its key providers of screens, said Friday morning it would get up to $400 million from bailout partner Harvest Tech Investment Management Co. Nestled into its two-page stock exchange statement was the revelation that the funding includes $100 million already pledged by a customer.

Apple is NOT at the leading edge of screens. They don't manufacture nor design their own.

I always thought the best display was the Samsung Galaxy?

I'm not sure iPhone has been cutting edge in anything really - the battery, camera, screen and speed have all be surpassed.

Maybe that $1 billion is to challenge the leaders?

The X was class leading when it came out, but yeah it's been easily superceded by Samsung and even OnePlus since then. The next gen of iPhones need to have 120hz screens imo. High refresh rates are the next area of development in mobile devices.

To be honest, I stopped caring about screen resolution, refresh rates etc a long time ago. As far as I’m concerned the major brands premium phone models already reached a standard beyond which the average user’s not going to notice much difference. The bigger thing for me is finding ways to reduce energy consumption - by the screen or any other component. I’d be quite happy with whatever was state of the art a year or so back if the phone could just go for three days between recharges.
