Apple drops cheap iPods

After years of being outsold by the iPhone, the venerable iPod has taken a big step toward eventual oblivion. Apple Inc. said Thursday it was discontinuing two of the cheapest iPod models: the nano and shuffle.

Such a crass & vague headline by "newsfeed" bot.

Any number of headings like the below sites could have been used:

I wish Apple would relaunch the iPod Classic as an audiophile device. Similar design, but with click wheel down low and a taller display, and support for high resolution files (or at least Apple's lossless format). Also, great battery life and big hard drive. They could drop all other models and just call this thing the iPod.

Pretty sure it would sell like mad.

Demand for dedicated high res audio players is high enough that there are a bunch of devices on the market.

Astell&Kern, Sony Walkman, FiiO, iBasso, Onkyo, Pioneer, Opus etc. all make proper dedicated audio players and they absolutely destroy the quality of listening with your phone. If Apple came in with a proper iPod they'd slaughter them. I'd certainly buy one in a heartbeat.

OMG, I see that Sony 128GB NW-ZX2 Walkman - High-Resolution Digital Music Player costs USD 1200 !!!

People who care about music quality don't tend to be penny pinchers.

iSheep would buy anything with an apple logo on it. :p

Except that a proper iPod would probably be an epic device. Even if Apple didn't go cheap they'd be extremely unlikely to charge more than $500 for one, which would be exceptional value for money if it was a genuinely terrific high res audio player.

There was a point to the iPod Classic in that it had far better sound quality than a phone. The iPod touch is only as good as an iPhone (or Samsung), so there does not seem to be much point in buying one as a separate device.

128GB iPod Touch sounds nice, but not for USD299 !
Then I'm sure you understand how this price reduction does not come as good news to me. My 1 month old 128GB cost me $399 without tax
