Are they region locked?

i.e. does it matter what card I use to buy them online?

Yeah, they're for specific stores. If you're buying for the ZA Store or the Kenyan store your local card will work. U.S. Store, not so much. Need to buy those from third party vendors like buyfrompowerseller.com (there are threads about those on MyBB). For those you can use your local card or Pay Pal... They mail you the voucher number and you redeem it it the U.S. store.
PS. Third party vendors charge a premium for the service, so heads-up for that.

Never done it that way around but I suspect you'll find bumps in the road... Try it 'tho, who knows.
 
hmm need to find out what store said friend has selected then. So much for it being a surprise gift. Bit of a shtty system for gift cards. :(

And just realised my ZA card has expired yesterday. :/
 
Is the currency shown on the store of the apple device a reliable indicator of which store its on?

If you scroll to the bottom of iTunes or the Mac App Store, you should see a flag confirming what country's store you're in. Google uses the same system with the Play Store.

Anyway - its a ZA gift card I need.

Can't figure out how to actually buy one though. The ZA storefront doesn't seem to have an option that leads to gift cards. From googling a bit I patched together the URL where the ZA gift card thing should be:

https://www.apple.com/za/gift-cards/

That page only has a Redeem button though. All the other pages I check (UK, Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand) have a buy button there. :confused:

Buy iTunes voucher at a supermarket and send the code by email.

Unless you mean iStore gift vouchers to buy hardware. I dunno if Core has such.

Not in SA at the moment so the in store ones are the wrong ones unfortunately.
