Apple has blocked updates to Telegram since April

Telegram founder Pavel Durov said in a recent post that Apple has blocked the messaging services from releasing updates for its iOS apps.

The block came after Russian authorities ordered Apple to remove Telegram from the App Store.
 
Apple's behaviour is disgraceful here. To cause users outside Russia to be affected by this stuff, to heavily screw with Telegram's ability to compete with other apps, to not communicate at all with Telegram about the situation, but also in what the consequences of going along with Russia's request would be. Telegram is one of many messaging apps that are secure - is Apple going to remove all of them from the Russian/global App Store? And if apps like WhatsApp are not affected does that mean that they are not nearly as secure as they claim to be? Many countries have tyrannical governments (Russia, China, Turkey, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba etc.) - it is not acceptable for companies like Google and Apple to shrug their shoulders and say they have to comply with all requests from those governments. For many people it is literally life and death to communicate privately.
 
I guess that must mean WhatsApp will just rollover and handover your data then.

Think about what you're saying. A mafia state wants to block Telegram because they cannot intercept or access messages - to me that is a very compelling reason to use Telegram.

Also, I'm not affected on Android.
 
Yeah on Android you can still very easily download the .apk and sideload it.

Companies that want to operate in a country have an obligation to follow the countries laws.

I clearly recall Apple refusing to comply with the FBI to protect the integrity of their ecosystem. What is ethical is not always legal - companies that only consider the former in their actions are to be avoided at all costs considering the corrupt world we live in.

And as mentioned, that doesn't excuse Apple causing serious issues for Telegram worldwide.

FBI didn’t have a search warrant. If they had one then Apple would have complied.

Apple has an obligation to its board and shareholders, ethics in business is only applicable when it receives bad attention.

You're moving the goal posts. The FBI specifically wanted keys to be able to access iPhones in general. With or without legal support, I seriously doubt Apple would ever comply with such a request as it would completely compromise the security of their entire system.

As many companies have said, law enforcement and governments cannot be trusted to keep such sensitive encryption information secure. Google, MS, Apple, Amazon etc. would be utterly insane to hand it over.

The topic at hand is Telegram's refusal to compromise the integrity of their system to the benefit of Russia's oppressive government.

FBI can want all the want. There was no court ordered. The Russian courts banned telegram.

How am I moving the goal posts where I am showing the two are not alike at all and the Apple legally complied with one and didn’t have to with the other?

I see what you mean actually. Apple would comply if they were forced to by the courts as they have a lot more to lose.

Because you weren't comparing Apples and Apples (hehe). Telegram was ordered to compromise their entire system and refused. Apple has been asked to compromise their entire system and also refused. They are on the same page with regards to the privacy of their users. If Apple received a court order to hand over encryption keys, you can be damn sure they'd refuse.

When it comes to invididual requests, Apple complies and so does Telegram. Telegram has foamed at the mouth several times after idiot politicians made ignorant comments about Telegram being a sanctuary for terrorists and paedophiles when Telegram responds very timeously to all reports and has algorithms that proactively try detect the worst types of content in public groups.
 
Telegram CEO thanks Apple for allowing it to ship first app update since March

As we reported yesterday, Telegram’s CEO said that Apple was blocking the company from releasing updates to the messaging service since Russian authorities deemed the app illegal. Now, Apple and Telegram have come to some sort of solution…

It’s unclear how Russia’s ban on the messaging app influenced Apple to block updates for Telegram globally. But whatever the issue was, it seems to be resolved now. Telegram CEO, Pavel Durov, shared in a tweet today a thank you to Tim Cook and Apple for allowing the company to release its first update since March.

This is a notable update as Telegram was a bit late to implementing changes needed as GDPR went into effect at the end of last month.

Here are the release notes for today’s Telegram update:

GDPR Update

- Updated the registration process. If you live in the UK or EU, you must be 16 years or older to use Telegram.
- When signing up for Telegram, you accept our Privacy Policy.
- You can now stop updating your contacts and delete your synced contacts in Privacy & Security settings.
- If you enabled link previews in Secret Chats, you can now disable them in Privacy & Security settings.

The situation was a bit different, from what I remember. The FBI wanted something from Apple that doesn't (or didn't) currently exist. Russia wants from Telegram something they have access to.

Legally that makes a big difference.

There was a court order issued against Apple, but it became irrelevant when the FBI dropped their request.
