Apple iPad confirmed

Still a fairly strong 1st gen release. You can see they realize there might be some initial resistance to the tablet concept, so they are playing most of their cards in the hope people will actually commit to buying the thing.

It is a strong start. I was just looking at the specs and its only 1.1mm thicker than the iPhone.

I'd love one of these just to put my portfolio on. It's almost reason enough to start doing video now.

Apple just could'nt lose out on the hugely lucrative netbook market, could they now?! Even if this is their delayed & crippled answer to the popular netbook, Jobs knows they will easily sell sufficient quantities to boost Apple profits yet again, based purely on the Apple 'i-....' fever that's sweeping the market. It's still priced higher than the average netbook, with similar specs to my HTC HD2 smartphone, yet less portable than my phone. The question to ask is: how does this 'revolutionary new product' improve on what's currently available to us ?

It's running iphone OS 3.2, so no multitasking at the moment.

Clearly when iphone OS 4.0 comes out it will get multitasking.

Also since it's based on the iphone os, no multitasking or flash

Yet another one of it's biggest failings. The internet in your hand. Well, it's not if it can't do flash. Most sites have flash content in them these days.

Engadget has a hands on.

It's not light. It feels pretty weighty in your hand.
The screen is stunning, and it's 1024 x 768. Feels just like a huge iPhone in your hands.
The speed of the CPU is something to be marveled at. It is blazingly fast from what we can tell. Webpages loaded up super fast, and scrolling was without a hiccup. Moving into and out of apps was a breeze. Everything flew.
There's no multitasking at all. It's a real disappointment. All this power and very little you can do with it at once. No multitasking means no streaming Pandora when you're working in Pages... you can figure it out. It's a real setback for this device.
The ebook implementation is about as close as you can get to reading without a stack of bound paper in your hand. The visual stuff really helps flesh out the experience. It may be just for show, but it counts here.
No camera. None, nada. Zip. No video conferencing here folks. Hell, it doesn't have an SMS app!
It's running iPhone OS 3.2.
The keyboard is good, not great. Not quite as responsive as it looked in the demos.
No Flash confirmed. So Hulu is out for you, folks!

The iPhone/iPod Touch doesnt have flash and some would say it's done pretty well.

Are people surprised by this?

Well, it is being billed as the next generation in computer technology, the way of the future. All the usual Apple marketing hype. Hence the underwhelming impression it leaves when you discover it's just a big iphone minus the phone. Sure, it is pretty and I'd take one if you gave it to me, but it really is not all that amazing.

No flash is a blessing really. There are few things on the web more irritating than 99% of flash's uses.

Was that in the video? I'm not having much luck streaming it.

How they managed to get a device of that size to be strong enough for everyday use is a bit more than hype.

Not too worried about it not being a phone - I have one already - but I'm pretty sure VOIP hasnt been ruled out. I make more calls on my iPhone with skype than I do via Vodacom.

Is it perfect - of course not. No device is without it's flaws.

Whats the difference between this and a iPhone or iPod Touch except screen size? No this is crap man! Its a extremely limited(functionality wise because its running a phone OS) netbook without a keyboard. :wtf: apple should put the mac OS on it or a modified version!

I agree! I've been noticing the hype building about this new Tablet, and when I think Tablet, I think tablet PC, so I was expecting it to be full MAC OSX. So when reading the specs for the first time I was like WOW, a netbook/capacitative touch device with all these features... but then I see you gotta get your apps from app store lol.
The Nexus One has a ghz processor AND fits in your pocket, and I'm sure the next iPhone that'll come out will have 1ghz+ too. I think the iPhone and Nexus One are awesome for book reading too. Fits in one hand and you can read in bed even in low light if you swap to white text on black.

I think combined with an iphone, I'd just stop using this thing once the novelty wears off. I wanted a full OSX you could really dig into and customise. But thats just me.. Android FTW! :D

Some of us count no flash as a benefit... HTML5 video please. Safari supports it.

Its also half the price of ur HD2. I rather have a 3310 and a iPAD that an HD2

I'm definitely getting one.

Edit: I just so the price $729 for 32 GB iPad with 3G, now that's not ayoba.

499 for iPAD without 3G (AYOBA)!
629 for iPAD with 3G (Not so ayoba)! I rate this price jump is one of the main reasons they didn't stick a usb port on it. Anyways, i am still gonna get one in april/may (will wait for 3G version).

I will wait for version 2 of this. I am sure it will have MANY flaws! Obvious ones already mentioned, but what about the not-so-obvious.

Still think its overpriced. Does it support multitouch? If not, then double phail!!!

edit: Nevermind, video says its a multitouch device :-)

I AM STOKED, might even sell out and get version 1. lol
