Apple starts taking iPad orders

Apple began taking pre-orders for its much- hyped iPad tablet computer Friday, some three weeks before the sleek new device goes on sale in the United States.

I wonder if/when Core will get around to negotiating price and availability on the iPad... its quite clear that the recent iPod price cuts are being driven by the upcoming iPad release.

Ya, I think they should be able to get the ipad into SA at quite a good price. We'll import a few just for the hell of it and see how they sell. I just want to try them out and compare the ipad to Kindle.

The iPad is pretty much a TOY. Now you could say a Macbook/MBP/netbook/laptop PC is a toy too, if you only use it to play games or mess around, but they do have other utility. The iPad in its present form is a toy - a platform to deliver iTunes content - and we can't even get iTunes content legitimately in SA (even with iTunes vouchers you're breaking the licensing terms, since SA has no SA specific iTunes Store). So while some people will buy it, it will not enjoy the toy factor of the US version (iTunes store, flat rate 3G service, ebooks and newspaper subscriptions etc). For such a luxury toy device, I'm sure there won't be a lot of demand. It's like buying a PS3 and not being able to buy games legitimately locally.

Oh NO! Not for me thank you! I love my iPhone and I don't need a tablet that doesn't perform well at anything!
